ATMA is proud to present Ian Parker’s first ATMA recording with the London Symphony Orchestra, featuring major works for piano and orchestra by Ravel, Stravinsky, and Gershwin. Magnetic, easy-going and delightfully articulate, Canadian pianist Ian Parker captivates audiences wherever he goes. An enthusiastic recitalist, Mr. Parker has performed across the United States,Western Europe, Israel, and throughout Canada on tours with Debut Atlantic and Jeunesses Musicales du Canada. The London Symphony Orchestra is widely regarded to be one of the world’s leading orchestras. Resident at the Barbican in London, the LSO presents over 70 concerts there each year. Michael Francis came to prominence as a conductor in January 2007 when he stepped out of the double bass section to replace an indisposed Valery Gergiev for a concert with the London Symphony Orchestra.
Carmina Burana is renowned for the thrilling opening chorus, continuing on a wild journey through a barbaric world of changing fortunes and fate, love and lust, death, temptation and submission. This is a hugely engaging recording. This version conducted by Antony Walker(Music Director of the Pittsburgh Opera and the Washington Concert Opera), uses the pared-back forces of voices, two pianos and percussion (as prepared by Orff) to effective and stimulating effect. The oft heard dirge of heavy orchestration is banished, leaving a strong, cleanly articulated, vigorously sprung performance with some notable performances from Australian soloists Jonathon Summers, Sara Macliver and Paul McMahon and percussion group Synergy. Antony Walker shines with his command of working with such forces.

The first release in Valery Gergiev's Rachmaninov symphony cycle features a magnificent performance of the Symphony No.2, recorded in September 2008 at the Barbican. This vast work was composed when Rachmaninov was at the pinnacle of his careers as composer, pianist and conductor. Filled with emotion and brimming with beautiful melodies, it is a masterpiece and the epitome of the Romantic symphony. The recording features the complete version of the symphony and will be followed in future years by the first and third symphonies as well as the Symphonic Dances Rachmaninov’s vast Second Symphony was composed when he was at the pinnacle of his career as a composer, pianist and conductor. Filled with emotion and brimming with beautiful melodies, it is a masterpiece and the epitome of the Romantic symphony. It is presented here in its entirety. Reviews: Editor’s Choice 'This Rachmaninov finds the London Symphony Orchestra warm and irresistibly propulsive ... Gergiev has a feel for the romantic urgency of the music as well as its lyrical impulse and the LSO responds as though its life depended upon it' Gramophone ***** ‘Gergiev seems to communicate a darker side to this music’ Audiophile Audition (US) 'breathtakingly beautiful string playing. I greedily anticipate the release of the other symphonies in due course’ International Record Review 'As you would expect with the charismatic Valery Gergiev on the conductor's platform, this performance of Rachmaninov's opulent symphony is full of long sweeping gestures, at times a little moody, but packed full of the feel of spontaneity that comes from a "live" recording. He allows the slow movement ample time to beguile the ears and turns up the heat for an exciting finale. The London Symphony respond perfectly to his many subtle rhythmic infections, the playing in the superlative class. Good sound generous in detail' Yorkshire Post ***** 'the sweep of emotion that runs through all four movements is as polished as it is inexorable. The opening movement unfolds like an inbound tide, the waves of voluptuous sound building with a potency that is rich and sonorous. Contrast that with the heightened energy of the second movement, the familiar glow of the Adagio, and the fiery control of the finale, and you have a performance with Gergiev's fingerprint all over it'The Scotsman ‘a wonderful new LSO Live recording’ Chicago Tribune ‘a fine performance, well engineered’ ClassicsToday
