Angela Hewitt takes a well-deserved break from her mammoth Bach and Couperin surveys to present us with this enthralling set of Chopin’s most distinguished piano pieces – the complete Nocturnes and Impromptus. Between 1830 and 1846 Chopin wrote eighteen Nocturnes that were published more or less in the order in which they were written. By spanning almost his entire creative life, they give us a marvellous opportunity to see not only how his early works were already totally inspired and original, but also how his style and emotional maturity developed through the years. The four Impromptus date from 1835 to 1842. The title suggests improvisation; they might very well have been conceived as such initially, but we know that Chopin went through agonies when it came to writing a musical idea down. He would often spend six weeks on a page, only to return to what he had written in the first place. You wouldn’t know it listening to these pieces. They are full of vitality and freshness, and carry us along with great fluidity. Hewitt’s performances are every bit as fresh as one would expect from the pianist hailed as ‘one of the reliably mesmerising musicians of the day’, with ‘the ability to convey a spiritual seriousness that nonetheless does not exclude an utter charm’ (The Sunday Times). Lepiej późno niż wcale. To codzienne powiedzenie jak ulał pasuje do znaczącego faktu, jakim bez wątpienia jest ukazanie się wreszcie w Polsce albumu „What Would The Community Think?" (1996) występującej pod kryptonimem Cat Power i osiadłej w Nowym Jorku pieśniarki-autorki Chan Marshall.To był trzeci album sygnowany przez Cat Power. Dwa wcześniejsze, nagrane jakby jednym tchem, „Dear Sir" (1995) i „Myra Lee" (1996), wzbudziły raczej umiarkowane zainteresowanie. Dopiero występ Chan jako support sensacyjnej Liz Phair i nagranie pierwszej w barwach renomowanego Matadoru płyty, właśne tej - czyli „What Would The Community Think? - okazały się momentem przełomowym w jej karierze. Przede wszystkim udało się Chan wyśmienicie pogodzić i wyważyć proporcje między jej południowymi korzeniami a nowojorskim, postpunkowym niepokojem i alienacją. Utwory w rodzaju osadzonych w tradycji bluesa i country „They Tell Me" i „Taking People" nasycone zostały wielkomiejską intensywnością emocjonalną. Inne piosenki - tytułowa, „Good Clean Fun" czy „Nude As The News" - to pełne napięcia, bardzo osobiste metropolitarne pejzaże, szkicowane z perspektywy kobiety wrażliwej, może nieco zagubionej, ale bynajmniej nie słabej czy kruchej. Album „What Would The Community Think?" wpisał Cat Power na listę takich wykonawczyń, jak Kristin Hersh czy PJ Harvey. To był jednak przede wszystkim punkt zwrotny, od którego wiodła już prosta droga do tak świetnych artystycznych osiągnięć, jak „You Are Free" (2003) i ubiegłoroczny „The Greatest", będący zapisem sentymentalnej podróży Chan Marshall do krainy jej dzieciństwa, czyli na południe USA.

On the occasion of the 400th anniversary of Giovanni Gabrieli’s death, who was one of the most influential musicians of the Venetian School, we are pleased to present you with this extraordinary recording of “La Musica per San Rocco”.   "La Musica per San Rocco" can be imagined as a type of music event which must have been usual in 17th Century Venice, and which represented its relish for splendour and freedom from strict schemes very well.   Thomas Coryat wrote 1611 in his report "Coryat's Crudities": "The third feast was upon Saint Roches day being Saturday and the sixth day of August, where I heard the best musicke that ever I did in all my life both in the morning and in the afternoone, so good that I would willingly goe an hundred miles a foote at any time to hear the like...This feast consisted principally of musicke, which was both vocall and instrumentall, so good, so delectable, so rare, so admirable, so superexcellent, that I did even ravish and stupifie all those strangers that never heard the like...".
