If the name Friedrich Kalkbrenner is familiar at all, it’s probably for his famous suggestion that Chopin would benefit from three years of study with him (a bold offer the Pole wisely turned down). But, as Hyperion’s ever-expanding Romantic Piano Concerto series has repeatedly shown, received historical opinion and musical quality don’t always go hand in hand. With Volume 56 we reach the second and final instalment of Kalkbrenner’s concertos, dazzlingly played by Howard Shelley, directing the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra from the keyboard. For all that Kalkbrenner wasn’t afraid to write big, bold orchestral introductions, it’s when the pianist makes his entry that you realize what a jawdropping player he must have been, with writing of such glittering, glistening panache that it must have had those polite salon ladies reaching for their smelling salts.

Na 2-płytowym albumie John Legend & The Roots łączą swoje siły na płycie "Wake Up", będącej zbiorem zaangażowanych coverów z lat 60-tych i 70-tych, zachęcających do obudzenia się (stąd tytuł płyty) i działania. Pomysł kolaboracji narodził się podczas kampanii prezydenckiej w 2008 roku - czołowy przedstawiciele nurtu R&B i legendarny zespół hip-hopowy najpierw zamierzali nagrać singiel o nadchodzących zmianach, nadziei i potrzebie aktywności społecznej, ale wkrótce plan ten rozrósł się do całej płyty. Trafiło na nią 11 poruszających kawałków mieszających w sobie wpływy hip-hopu z rockiem, reggae a nawet gospel - wśród najbardziej znanych wymienić należy “Wholly Holy” z reperturau Marvina Gaye'a, “Little Ghetto Boy” Donny'ego Hathaway'a a także utwory nieco zapomniane: “Hard Times” Baby Huey and the Babysitters czy “Hang on in There” Mike'a Jamesa Kirklanda. Jest tu też jedna nowa kompozycja Johna Legenda - "Shine". Utwory te brzmią teraz niesamowicie aktualnie - w większości z nich nie potrzeba zmieniać ani słowa. Jak choćby w tytułowym 'Wake Up!" (wybranym na singla utworze z gościnnym udziałem Melani Fiony i Commona) , który w kolejnych zwrotkach mówi o potrzebie edykacji, zapewnienia opieki medycznej, poprawy swojego otoczenia. Warstwa tekstowa pozostała więc nienaruszona." "Te kawałki powstały w czasach, kiedy ludzie jednoczyli się, potrafili razem działać" - dodaje perkusista i muzyczny 'mózg' The Roots - Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson.
