The concluding song of Schubert’s Winterreise – “The Hurdy-Gurdy Man” – inspired Matthias Loibner and Nataša Mircović-De Ro to their own interpretation for soprano and hurdy-gurdy. Not only the obvious instrumentation is reflected in it, but also the hopelessness, emptiness, inner strife, and simplification that pervades the whole cycle.
