The Brabant Ensemble, better known for uncovering works by forgotten composers such as Dominique de Phinot, turns to a giant of the Renaissance—perhaps the most celebrated name of the period. Yet within Palestrina’s huge output there are many hidden gems, lacking both recordings and modern performing editions, and it is from among these that the ensemble’s director Stephen Rice has chosen the repertoire for this album. A Mass—Missa Ad coenam Agni, from Palestrina’s first book of Mass-settings—is included, plus antiphons, motets and five Eastertide Offertories. Each work is, as Stephen Rice states in his typically informative booklet notes, ‘a finely crafted addition to the liturgy’.The Brabant Ensemble brings a matchless blend of musicianship, scholarship and sensitive singing to this glorious music.
The ensemble Les Cornets Noirs (named after their black, leather covered cornettos) has unearthed some real musical treasures: the collection of Gustaf Düben, chapel-master at the court of Sweden, encompasses more than 2300 musical works that are partly composers’ autographs, partly scribal copies. Düben must have started collecting autographs of established German and Italian composers already during his studies in Germany, and subsequently his position as court chapel-master undoubtedly afforded him many occasions to acquire or copy valuable music. Later, the Düben Collection wandered from Stockholm to the University Library in Uppsala.From the extensive repertoire, Les Cornets Noirs, who play with masterly virtuosity and mellow sound, have selected sonatas intended for “cornetti” as well as other compositionally mature chamber music works and sacred concertos (bass: Wolf Matthias Friedrich) that reflect a broad spectrum of the musical landscapes in Germany, Italy, and the Baltic Sea region of the seventeenth century.
Płyta zawiera czternaście pieśni z cyklu Symphonia harmoniae caelestium revelationum, które prezentują podstawową myśl św. Hildegardy o tym, że na początku człowiek żył w harmonii ze swoim Stwórcą, a także ze światem i z samym sobą. Grzech tę harmonię zaburzył i jej odnowienie dokona się jedynie dzięki miłosierdziu Ojca, który w ofierze swojego Syna na krzyżu, widzi powrót wszystkich swoich synów. Zatem możemy odczytywać tę muzykę jako duchową drogę wygnanego z raju człowieka do Niebieskiego Jeruzalem. Zawarte na płycie utwory połączone zostały improwizacjami instrumentalnymi, dzięki którym poszczególne wątki przedstawionej narracji splatają się w zwartą całość. Wprowadzeniem do płyty i swoistym motto całości jest fragment tekstu św. Hildegardy z Liber divinorum operum przeczytany przez Dorotę Segdę, aktorkę Narodowego Teatru Starego i rektora krakowskiej AST. Krakowski zespół wokalny Flores Rosarum, od lat zajmujący się monodią liturgiczną, w śpiewach św. Hildegardy znalazł szczególne upodobanie, co ma swój wyraz także w jego nazwie nawiązującej do jednego z responsoriów dedykowanego męczennikom. Interpretacja i propagowanie muzyki tej niezwykłej Świętej stały się cechą charakterystyczną zespołu, dzięki której stał się on rozpoznawalny w całej Polsce. „Mamy nadzieję, że nasza płyta przyczyni się do duchowej, intelektualnej i artystycznej spuścizny niezwykłej kobiety, jaką była św. Hildegarda. Jej twórczość należy do skarbca Europy i jest świadectwem piękna, które kieruje w stronę Boga i w duchu benedyktyńskiego zawołania ora et labora stanowi zaproszenie do łączenia pracy z modlitwą, rozumu z wiarą, nieba z ziemią.” ‒ opowiada s. Think you know Italian baroque chamber music? Think again. The range, diversity – and even wackiness – is remarkable, as illustrated by Flights of Fantasy, an album of acute inventiveness by Avie stalwart Monica Huggett and the chamber soloists of her Irish Baroque Orchestra. Take Carlo Farina’s Capriccio Stravagante, which translates as “outlandish whim”, and imitates barking dogs, meowing cats and gunfire. More serious, but no less virtuosic, experimental forms occur in works by Marini, Castello, Legrenzi, and Cavalli – the Venetian best known for his operas – all heard on this album. Created in 1996, the period-instrument Irish Baroque Orchestra occupies a fundamental place in Ireland’s musical landscape. Ten years in, the mantle of artistic director was assumed by Monica Huggett, who has created a decades-long career of critically acclaimed and award-winning recordings, including the Billboard chart-topping, Grammy-nominated Bach Orchestral Suites on Avie (AV 2171).
