Sons of the organist Isaak Hassler, Hans Leo and Jacob Hassler were born in Nuremberg, where they received their initial musical training from their father. Both went to study in Italy, we know that Andrea Gabrieli would become Hans Leo's teacher. On returning, they entered the service of the Fugger family in Augsburg. Later on, Hans Leo became Kapellmeister to the Prince Elector of Saxony Christian II, and Jacob was appointed chamber organist at the Court chapel of Emperor Rudolph II in Prague. This CD presents six of the extant keyboard compositions by Jacob Hassler as well as Hans Leo Hassler's Variations on Ich gieng einmal spatieren — a remarkable piece which comes close to Bach's Goldberg variations, regarding its extent and diversity. The Fugger family owned several instruments by Franciscus Patavinus, superbly worked, decorated with gold and ivory ornamentation, and with a broad, full sound. It is more than probable that both Hans Leo and Jacob Hassler played these instruments while in the service of the Fuggers in Augsburg. For this reason the Patavinus harpsichord, part of the collection of the Deutsches Museum in Munich since 1910, was used for the present recording. It closely resembles an instrument listed in the Fuggers' inventory, and could actually be the one described. The original signature on the name board, according to the purchase documents, was »Francisci Patavini Dicti Ongaro, 1561«, making it one of the few surviving harpsichords from the 16th century. The magnificent instrument is largely in its original state.

Marin Marais był jednym z tych kompozytorów barokowych, którzy dużą część swojej twórczości napisali na violę da gamba. Był uczniem Jeana-Baptiste’a Lully’ego i słynnego muzyka grającego na violi da gamba Jeana de Sainte-Colombe’a. W 1676 Marais został zatrudniony w Wersalu, a 3 lata później został mianowany „ordinaire de la chambre du roy pour la viole”, który to tytuł zachował aż do 1725. Był mistrzem w grze na violi da gamba. Wydał pięć ksiąg Pièces de viole na ten instrument. W boxie zawierającym pięć płyt znajdują się utwory z drugiej księgi w wykonaniu gambisty François Joubert-Caillet, któremu towarzyszy zespół L' Achéron.

Giovanni Girolamo Kapsberger (1580-1651) was one of the most innovative and original composers in early seventeenth-century Rome, and a virtuoso on the lute and chitarrone. In 1630 Kapsperger published his “Dialogo posto in musica” in Rome, with the title I Pastori di Bettelemme nella nascita di N. S. Giesu Christo (The Shepherds of Bethlehem at the birth of Our Saviour Jesus Christ). With this, he applied himself to a genre which, in the first decades of the seventeenth century, enjoyed an extraordinarily high popularity in Rome, and at the same time may be regarded as a forerunner of the oratorio: the sacred dialogue madrigal. Kapsperger sets the poetic text of Giulio Rospigliosi, the most distinguished poet in Rome, in a varied sequence of recitative and several strong choral settings. The layout of the recitative is wholly dictated by the content and structure of the language, and reveals Kapsperger as a master of monody. The choruses, with up to six voices, Kapsperger sets homophonically throughout. It is highly likely that the first performance of the “Shepherds of Bethlehem” took place within the framework of a magnificent banquet in one of the Papal palaces after Vespers on the 24th December. The express mention of the Pope in the libretto makes it probable that Urban VII himself was present at the performance.
