The case of Hummel is sadly typical of that of many early nineteenth-century composers. Accorded the greatest respect as composer and performer and showered with gifts and honours for most of his life, Hummel fell into near-oblivion soon after his death, his œuvre largely neglected apart from representations in conservatory curricula. Happily, he and others like him are now beginning to enjoy the popularity they deserve. He was a most versatile composer, his output embracing all genres with the significant exception of the symphony – unsurprising, perhaps, in view of Beethoven’s ongoing contribution; compare Brahms’s reticence in embarking on his own first essay in the form.

Today, with authenticity a crucial concern in musical performance, the idea of arranging piano concertos by Mozart for chamber forces seems almost bizarre. But in the 1830s, when the publisher Schott commissioned Johann Nepomuk Hummel to produce these versions of seven of Mozart’s most popular concertos for piano, flute, violin and cello, it was a common practice aimed at facilitating performances of orchestral works in domestic settings. And few could have brought such insights to the procedure as Hummel, one of the earliest protagonists on the stage of the virtuoso era, but also regarded by his contemporaries as the last legitimate representative of the ‘classical’ style. As a young boy Hummel had lived and studied in Mozart’s household for two years, which had given him the opportunity to follow the composition of the Concertos in C minor, K491, and C major, K503, at close quarters. His arrangements may be described as the result of a virtuoso’s approach to the works of a revered teacher, with a piano part which combines the orchestral parts, the solo line and Hummel’s own added ornamentations and decorative alterations, whilst the other instruments accompany or reinforce the piano writing. Fumiko Shiraga’s performances were originally released on single discs between 2003 and 2006, to critical acclaim, including a Gramophone ‘Editor’s Choice’ and a ‘CD des Doppelmonats’ in Piano News: ‘This is how Mozart must sound, exactly like this…’ Gathered here in an attractively priced box set, they now provide a wider audience with the opportunity of catching a glimpse of how Mozart’s music was perceived and handed down during the decades after his death.

From Carl Reinecke's Undine Sonata, composed in 1882, to Poulenc's 1957 Flute Sonata this disc brings together five central works in the repertoire for flute and piano, covering a wide range of styles and approaches. Reinecke's work is a musical re-telling of the well-known story of Undine, the water spirit who marries a knight, but is betrayed and takes her revenge on him. Frank Martin's virtuosic Ballade (1939) features an acrobatic flute cadenza, roaming melismas and irrepressible cascades, generating a compelling sense of drama. In 1945, while in exile during the German occupation of Czechoslovakia, Martinů composed his Flute Sonata, in which the virtues of his distinct musical language are plain to hear - lyrical lines, a rhythmic drive which is both energetic and lively and an effective use of tone colour. Six years later the bird-lover Messiaen composed Le merle noir, constructed around the song of the blackbird, which he painstakingly noted down and then found the means to imitate it on the flute. Poulenc's melodic Sonata, finally, has become a signature work for its composer: its lightness, transparency and sonic refinement have charmed audiences ever since the first performance. Presenting this substantial programme is Sharon Bezaly, one of today's leading flutists, supported by the eminent pianist Ronald Brautigam. The same performers have previously released a highly acclaimed duo disc which Classic FM Magazine described as 'compulsively listenable … Prokofiev's Flute Sonata has never sounded so perkily seductive on disc, nor has Schubert's enchanting set of variations given up its secrets so readily'. In agreement with this, website Classics Today.com wrote: 'On the evidence of this sensational disc, it seems clear that Sharon Bezaly is a flutist virtually without peer in the world today'

Jej sugestywna gra uczyniła z tej artystki ulubienicę wielu dyrygentów i krytyków” („The New Yorker”).Płyty Grimaud są bestsellerami. To jedna z najlepszych współczesnych wiolonczelistek, przyciągająca intrygującą, pełnokrwistą grą i charyzmatyczną osobowością.
