Eugène Ysaÿe was the charismatic and flamboyant successor to Wieniawski in the great French tradition of violin virtuosity. Yet he was to take the genre to new and giddy heights with his Six Sonatas for solo violin of 1924. Each sonata is dedicated to one of the rising stars of the younger generation of virtuosos and the work as a whole is in many ways a twentieth-century response to the Six Sonatas and Partitas for solo violin by Bach. Jedno z bardzo nielicznych cennych nagrań Cecilli Bartoli dla Teldec i Erato. Wspaniała obsada, w której obok Bartoli wystąpili m.in. Christoph Prégardien i Patricia Petibon. Słynny zespół Concentus Music Wien – pierwsza w Europie profesjonalna orkiestra, specjalizująca się w wykonawstwie muzyki dawnej - prowadzi sam Nikolaus Harnoncourt. Ten legendarny austriacki dyrygent, uważany za jednego z najważniejszych przedstawicieli nurtu wykonawstwa historycznie poinformowanego, był także specjalistą w dziedzinie opery. Po jego śmierci Sir Nicholas Kenyon napisał w „Gramophone”: „Chciał wiedzieć, czemu kompozytorzy tworzyli taką muzykę, jaką tworzyli, a nie inną, zrozumieć jakie były ich intencje, reagować na brzmienie instrumentów jakie wykorzystywali i ich właściwości brzmieniowe, a także zobaczyć jak mogłyby być najlepiej odtworzone w naszych czasach. Nie wierzył w „autentyczność” jako taką i nigdy nie używał takiego sformułowania. Zamiast tego uważał „tradycję” za lenistwo, tak jak Mahler przed nim”.
