Sir Neville Mariner jest jedną z największych osobistości wśród współczesnych dyrygentów. Wieloletni dyrektor słynnego zespołu Academy of St. Martin in the Fields jest szczególnie znany z interpretacji repertuaru epoki klasycyzmu i baroku. Choć w kwietniu 2014 obchodził 90. urodziny, wciąż bierze do ręki batutę. Tak było też 15 listopada 2013 r. kiedy Mariner stanął za pulpitem dyrygenta w Auli Uniwersyteckiej w Poznaniu by poprowadzić Orkiestrę Filharmonii Poznańskiej podczas koncertu z cyklu „Mistrzowie batuty”. Niniejsza płyta stanowi zapis tego wydarzenia.
Edward Elgar's masterly Enigma Variations are undoubtedly his most famous work of and is also the first major piece he composed. The Enigma Variations brought him international recognition and brought England back on the musical map. Elgar composed the variations in 1899. In the 13 variations and finale the composer characterizes some of his friends, identified only by their initials - so to the public, this was initially a mystery, an "enigma" as to who it was. But Elgar also spoke about a “well-known tune” which he hid in his composition, which to this date has gone undiscovered – so indeed, there is a second “enigma” as well. In spite of whatever puzzle the composer may have intended, the work of highly effective, well structured, well orchestrated, colorful, and compelling. The symphonic study "Falstaff", rarely performed these days, was written in 1913,shortly before the outbreak of World War II. The theme is of course, Shakespeare’s Falstaff, as he appeared in "Henry IV" and his sad progress from boon companion of Prince Hal, to his lonely exile, remembering when he a heard the “chimes at midnight.”

This new release is an IN MEMORIAM album for Yakov Kreizberg, a conductor who made a lot of recordings for PentaTone a lot of them with Julia Fischer. He was Music Director of the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra and Netherlands Chamber Orchestra. He also was principal guest conductor of the Wiener Symphoniker. All Julia Fischer’s concerto recordings are accompanied by Yakov Kreizberg. He died last year, age 51. This double SA-CD is offered for the price of 1 ½ top price SA-CD. Many of the tracks featured on this album come from award winning and well selling albums.
