Released as a boxed set of six discs – for the price of two – the cycle of Tchaikovsky's symphonies with Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra conducted by Neeme Järvi, may be described as resolutely unsentimental, with interpretations aiming to rid these popular scores of the melodramatic excesses that have become part of a century-long performance tradition. At the releases of the individual discs, this quality was remarked upon by reviewers, who described Symphony No.1 as 'superb ... liberated from all the slag of sugary romanticism' (ClassicsTodayFrance.com) and regarding No.4 wrote 'With immense skill and without any concessions to the pathetic, Neeme Järvi grants the work its full magnitude’ (Le Monde de la Musique). Other acclaimed instalments were Symphony No.2 ‘Little Russian’, hailed in Gramophone as ‘an outstanding performance … beautifully played and paced and immaculately recorded’ and No.3 ‘Polish’ of which, to quote International Record Review, Järvi presented ‘a free-flowing account that places choreographic elegance before symphonic muscle.’ Besides the six numbered symphonies, this ample selection (more than 7 hours of playing time) includes favourites such as Francesca da Rimini, Capriccio italien and Serenade for Strings as well as rarities, including rarely recorded extracts from the opera The Voyevoda and the incidental music to Dmitri the Pretender and Vassily Shuisky. The recordings remain available on the original discs, as Hybrid SACDs with a Surround Sound option.

The Second and Eleventh symphonies are both inspired by Russian revolutions. The Eleventh Symphony, subtitled “The Year 1905” marks the bloody revolution of that year. It is an astonishingly atmospheric symphony, of cinematic breadth, especially in second movement which depicts the Bloody Sunday massacre in St Petersburg. Symphony No 2 was written to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the October Revolution. At less than 20 minutes, it is a much shorter work than the Eleventh symphony yet no less dramatic. Although dismissed by the composer later in his career as an experiment, it remains an important step in the development of one of the greatest symphonists and both works receive definitive performances from the Mariinsky Orchestra and Chorus. Reviews: 'performed here with total conviction ... Gergiev captures its brooding majesty in a tense and involving performance, distinguished by the terrifying sound of the St Petersburg winds' Financial Times (UK) ‘Gergiev’s account is simply hair-raising [Symphony No 11]. Even by today’s high standard of orchestral playing, I suspect some orchestras would have trouble keeping up with Gergiev’s driving, intense approach: the Mariinsky players stick to him like glue. This is the best-recorded traversal of Symphony No 2’ American Record Guide (USA).

Wydanie zatytułowane "The Sound of the King's Singers" zawiera trzy z najbardziej znanych albumów grupy. The first release in Valery Gergiev's Rachmaninov symphony cycle features a magnificent performance of the Symphony No.2, recorded in September 2008 at the Barbican. This vast work was composed when Rachmaninov was at the pinnacle of his careers as composer, pianist and conductor. Filled with emotion and brimming with beautiful melodies, it is a masterpiece and the epitome of the Romantic symphony. The recording features the complete version of the symphony and will be followed in future years by the first and third symphonies as well as the Symphonic Dances   Rachmaninov’s vast Second Symphony was composed when he was at the pinnacle of his career as a composer, pianist and conductor. Filled with emotion and brimming with beautiful melodies, it is a masterpiece and the epitome of the Romantic symphony. It is presented here in its entirety.   Reviews:    Editor’s Choice 'This Rachmaninov finds the London Symphony Orchestra warm and irresistibly propulsive ... Gergiev has a feel for the romantic urgency of the music as well as its lyrical impulse and the LSO responds as though its life depended upon it' Gramophone   ***** ‘Gergiev seems to communicate a darker side to this music’ Audiophile Audition (US)   'breathtakingly beautiful string playing. I greedily anticipate the release of the other symphonies in due course’ International Record Review   'As you would expect with the charismatic Valery Gergiev on the conductor's platform, this performance of Rachmaninov's opulent symphony is full of long sweeping gestures, at times a little moody, but packed full of the feel of spontaneity that comes from a "live" recording. He allows the slow movement ample time to beguile the ears and turns up the heat for an exciting finale. The London Symphony respond perfectly to his many subtle rhythmic infections, the playing in the superlative class. Good sound generous in detail' Yorkshire Post   ***** 'the sweep of emotion that runs through all four movements is as polished as it is inexorable. The opening movement unfolds like an inbound tide, the waves of voluptuous sound building with a potency that is rich and sonorous. Contrast that with the heightened energy of the second movement, the familiar glow of the Adagio, and the fiery control of the finale, and you have a performance with Gergiev's fingerprint all over it'The Scotsman   ‘a wonderful new LSO Live recording’ Chicago Tribune   ‘a fine performance, well engineered’ ClassicsToday
