Instrument zwany arpeggione został wynaleziony w 1823 roku przez wiedeńskiego lutnika Johanna Georga Stauffera. Jest on zbudowany identycznie jak gitara, jednak gra się na nim smyczkiem jak na wiolonczeli i trzyma się go podczas gry na kolanach. Był on dość popularny tylko przez okres jednej dekady. Nie zachowały się żadne kompozycje na arpeggione oprócz jednej sonaty Franciszka Schuberta z 1824 roku. Guido Balestracci i muzycy z zespołu L’Amoroso stworzyli w nagraniu program oparty o repertuar na arpeggione i gitarę, która była często wykorzystywana do akompaniamentu w pieśniach Schuberta.
