Michał Markuszewski to nie tylko doskonały organista, ale także pasjonat starych instrumentów. Dzięki jego staraniom uratowano i odrestaurowano historyczne organy - niezwykły instrument Schlag&Söhne z Kościoła Reformowanego przy al. Solidarności w Warszawie, który można usłyszeć na płycie „Dux 0707”. Kolejną solową płytę dla Dux nagrał na organach Stiftskirche Cappenberg zbudowanych przez Vorenwega w 1788 roku. Na płycie zakomponowano utwory mistrzów: J.S. Bacha, C.P.E. Bacha i j. Pachelbela, ale także mniej znanych kompozytorów jak J.A. Reinecken czy D. Buxtehude. Z wyjątkową przyjemnością słucha się końcowej improwizacji do tematu „In dir ist Freude”, w której Michał Markuszewski pokazuje w pełni swoją niezwykłą wrażliwość na barwę dźwięku oraz techniczną doskonałość. Bach Collegium Japan i Masaaki Suzuki, po zamknięciu cyklu kantat sakralnych J.S. Bacha wydali nareszcie długo oczekiwaną pierwszą część tzw. Mszy Luterańskich. Mszom g-moll i G-Dur (BWV 235 i 236) towarzyszą cztery oddzielnie skomponowane Sanctus (BWV 237, 238, 249, 241). Jak zwykle maestria wykonania BCJ nie zawodzi. Płyta ze wszech miar godna polecenia!
The three cantatas on this recording come from the first half of the 1730s, by which time J.S. Bach was no longer writing a new cantata every week. In these later works, Bach’s affinity for instrumental colour is coming more clearly to the fore, as are elements of the new ‘empfindsamer Stil’ with its tendency towards expressive melodies rich in syncopations and suspensions, and towards homophonic writing. The three cantatas are also linked in that they are all chorale cantatas, harking back to Bach’s second year in Leipzig (1724–25), when the cantatas that he wrote were each based in their entirety on a well-known hymn. The opening cantata, In allen meinen Taten BWV 97, is a setting of nine strophes from a poem by Paul Fleming, one of the great German baroque poets, and begins with a splendid French overture, in which the orchestra intones a solemn, slow introduction with the typical dotted rhythms, followed by a lively fugal section during which the choir makes its entry. This is followed by BWV 177, Ich ruf zu dir, Herr Jesu Christ, which at its centre has the aria Verleih, dass ich aus Herzensgrund… a heartfelt prayer from the soprano and oboe da caccia for the capacity to forgive one’s enemies. The hymn Es ist das Heil uns kommen her, on which the closing BWV 9 is based, remains an important hymn in the German Evangelical Church. The text – and Bach’s setting of it – eloquently conveys the message that it is through faith rather than deeds that mankind may achieve salvation.

The Father, the Son and the Godfather is a snapshot from a time when art music escaped from the courts and churches. Domestic music-making in the company of close friends became a treasured extension of social interaction, and the resulting boom in ‘market opportunities’ offered composers a tremendous freedom in their choices of genres and styles, as demonstrated by this colourful programme. It features three composers whose music could not be more different, taking into account that all works were composed during the span of only two generations by authors who knew each other better than just well: J.S. Bach (the father), C.P.E. Bach (the son) and Georg Philipp Telemann (CPE’s godfather). We thus get Johann Sebastian’s rigorous, intellectually demanding Sonata in B minor, ample examples of the elegant and tender Empfindsamer Stil of his son C.P.E., and in two Trio Sonatas a taste of Telemann’s ‘world music’, in which the composer mixes elements of folk music from Poland with French and Italian styles of art music. This is the first recording of Paradiso Musicale, an ensemble featuring the acclaimed recorder player Dan Laurin and made up of an unusual combination of instruments: recorder, viola, cello and harpsichord. The members all have experiences from a number of musical genres, including avant-garde styles, and with musicians such as John McLaughlin, Prince and Frank Zappa as inspiration, their ultimate goal is to achieve the feeling of a jam session when performing. As can be heard on this disc – for instance in the final track, a Telemann Allegro – the result is exhilarating.
