Chandos has been attentive in promoting the orchestral works of Alexandre Tansman, who due to the vagaries of fashion has to a great extent been ignored. We now embark on the piano music and a deeply personal project for soloist Margaret Fingerhut. ‘My curiosity about the piano music of Tansman began over 20 years ago when I encountered the delightfully languid Berceuse he wrote for the album of Hommages to Roussel, and which I recorded for Chandos. The fact that he was born in Lodz, Poland, where my great-grandparents also came from, spurred me on to find out more about him, and since then I have been assiduously collecting his piano works - quite a task as it turns out that in the course of his long composing career Tansman was nothing if not prolific!’‘I feel his music deserves to be revalued and heard by a new generation of listeners, and so I wanted to create a CD to present an overview of his unique style and musical language. While the influences of Ravel, Poulenc, Milhaud and Stravinsky are apparent, along with jazz-inspired techniques, he himself professed his music to be rooted in his native Polish culture. So the starting point for this disc had to be his Mazurkas – after all, he wrote more of them than almost any other composer except for that other famous Polish exile-in-Paris, Chopin! Listen to his 2nd Mazurka to be transported to a world filled with gentle sweet melancholy. For me his piano music abounds in lyrical expression, tenderness, elegance, grace, good humour and exuberant virtuosity (he loved writing on three staves with huge leaps at great speed!). It seems such a shame that the forces of dogma and experimentalism which ruled Paris since the Second World War left so many casualties in their wake, composers like Tansman who determinedly stuck with neoclassicism and who were not afraid of melody. It is my hope that his individual voice can speak to us afresh’.Margaret Fingerhut displays her special artistry and élan to Tansman’s music.

18th-century Europe has been a period of production of a huge amount of instrumental chamber music particularly fashioned to the delight and entertainment of the society's upper classes. In the Rococo, especially the rising bourgeoisie was familiar enough with the language of music to be both consumers and active participants, with an ever-growing demand for musical novelty for their entertainment in private salons. The thriving market in chamber-music part-sets for domestic use (a score was considered unnecessary) was served by many professional musicians who worked outside the traditional spheres, as have been the church or the theatre. These interpreters-composers were chiefly violinists, but also flautists and oboists, often leading an itinerant life throughout Europe.The Pla brothers belonged to this kind of itinerant virtuosos: born into a Catalan family of musicians, they were excellent oboists, but played other instruments as well, and composed. Manuel Pla, known to have played also violin and harpsichord, established himself in Madrid as a military musician and theatre composer, probably remaining there until his death in 1766. Josep and Joan Baptista plied their trade outside Spain, as chamber music enjoyed limited popularity in their home country. From about 1751 they toured the courts and concert halls of the main European capitals, performing together. Apparently, the two brothers composed most of their sonatas together. After Josep's death in 1762, Joan Baptista continued alone, as oboist, bassoonist and dulcimer virtuoso, settling at the court in Lisbon from 1769 until his death in 1773. Being famous for the sweetnes and the brilliance of their playing, they were celebrated wherever they appeared. Nowadays, their music is still relatively unknown and very few of their works have been edited, performed or recorded. Almost hundred orchestral and chamber works by the Pla brothers survive in manuscript copies or old printed editions and there are references in various catalogues by 18th-century editors, of many others, which are still to be discovered.

On 11th March 2011 the earthquake off the Pacific coast of Japan and ensuing tsunami devastated the Tohoku region, causing great suffering and changing the lives of people not only in the affected areas but throughout the nation. This compilation, Bach for Japan, has been produced at the initiative of the Bach Collegium Japan and Masaaki Suzuki as part of their ongoing activities to support the victims of the disaster. As Masaaki Suzuki writes in his own introduction to the disc, it has been compiled ‘in commemoration of the large number of people who lost their lives, and in the hope that the music will offer consolation to those who have suffered bereavement, help to heal their hurt, and give them the strength to rebuild the country for the next generation.’ The selection comprises arias from BCJ’s ongoing cycle of the complete church cantatas, as well as instrumental movements and the motet Komm, Jesu, komm. Also included are three organ chorales, recorded by Masaaki Suzuki especially for this release. The disc is being sold for the benefit of ‘TOHOKU HELP’, a local relief effort organized by the Sendai Christian Alliance, with the performers donating their royalties and BIS Records contributing the same amount.
