John Coltrane założył swój pierwszy kwartet jako lider w nowojorskiej Jazz Gallery w maju 1960 roku. Zaczął także grać na saksofonie sopranowym podczas swojej kadencji w tym klubie. W tym właśnie czasie nagrał swoją jedyną sesję z trębaczem Donem Cherry.
