Think you know Italian baroque chamber music? Think again. The range, diversity – and even wackiness – is remarkable, as illustrated by Flights of Fantasy, an album of acute inventiveness by Avie stalwart Monica Huggett and the chamber soloists of her Irish Baroque Orchestra. Take Carlo Farina’s Capriccio Stravagante, which translates as “outlandish whim”, and imitates barking dogs, meowing cats and gunfire. More serious, but no less virtuosic, experimental forms occur in works by Marini, Castello, Legrenzi, and Cavalli – the Venetian best known for his operas – all heard on this album. Created in 1996, the period-instrument Irish Baroque Orchestra occupies a fundamental place in Ireland’s musical landscape. Ten years in, the mantle of artistic director was assumed by Monica Huggett, who has created a decades-long career of critically acclaimed and award-winning recordings, including the Billboard chart-topping, Grammy-nominated Bach Orchestral Suites on Avie (AV 2171).

British countertenor Iestyn Davies is one of the fastest rising stars on the concert and opera circuit. Following his highly acclaimed recording of Porpora cantatas, he returns for a second solo album with Hyperion, a selection of arias written for Gaetano Guadagni. Italian-born Guadagni was the first ‘modern’ castrato, famed all over Europe for the lyric purity of his voice and his powerful, naturalistic acting style. Not only did he enjoy a close artistic relationship with Handel, who nurtured Guadagni’s voice to fit the alto roles in his English oratorios, but he effectively created the role of Orpheus in Gluck’s Orfeo ed Euridice, an opera he thoroughly made his own. Here, Iestyn Davies is joined again by the renowned period-instrument band Arcangelo, directed by Jonathan Cohen

The Quatuor Franz Joseph invites listeners to discover the three string quartets, opus 1, by Hyacinthe Jadin, a French composer who is little known today. Born in 1776 in Versailles to a musical family, he was on the brink of a promising career when he died of tuberculosis, in September of 1800 at the age of 24.For his quartets, Jadin used the four-movement structure he had inherited from Haydn. Stylistically, they anticipate the great contrapuntal developments of the 19th century. Tinged with a pre-Romantic aesthetic, they are a French version of the Sturm und Drang movement which heralded the world of Schubert.The Quatuor Franz Joseph was created in 2002 by four enthusiastic and leading early-music string players from Montrea. These musicians seek to quench their thirst for the quartet repertoire of the Enlightenment using period instruments, while nourishing an interest for parallel repertoires.
