‘Chopin’s music presents us with a strange paradox' writes Yevgeny Sudbin in his liner notes to this recording. In Sudbin’s own experience, the music’s direct emotional appeal makes it instantly accessible to most listeners, but to the interpreter ‘it becomes a tough balancing act: on the one side, naïvety and blandness threaten, while, on the other side, a laboured and contrived approach could potentially damage the music'. Sudbin's own approach has been influenced by Chopin's own words regarding interpretation: 'Simplicity is the highest goal, achievable when you have overcome all difficulties.' But, as he recounts, he is also fascinated by historic recordings by legends such as Ignaz Friedman and Benno Moiseiwitch – performances which have made an impact on him on account of the highly personal playing: 'the beguiling rhythmic swings, freedom in phrasing, articulation that tickles you all over…' Sudbin opens his own Chopin recital with the expansive Fantaisie in F minor – sometimes described as the composer's 'grandest work' – continuing with a selection of pieces from three genres that are strongly associated with Chopin: Mazurkas, Nocturnes and the Ballades Nos 3 and 4. Following the 2005 release of his second disc, Piano Magazine described Yevgeny Sudbin in lyrical terms as 'a fearless technician with an all-encompassing command of his instrument; a musical dramatist of exceptional acumen and sophistication; a poet who moves seamlessly between unbridled rhetoric and extreme intimacy; a stylist who catches the particular spirit of everything he plays' – all qualities which would seem to be conducive to a memorable Chopin recital, and which Sudbin certainly brings to the fore in the encore À la minute, his own paraphrase on the composer's 'Minute Waltz'.

On 11th March 2011 the earthquake off the Pacific coast of Japan and ensuing tsunami devastated the Tohoku region, causing great suffering and changing the lives of people not only in the affected areas but throughout the nation. This compilation, Bach for Japan, has been produced at the initiative of the Bach Collegium Japan and Masaaki Suzuki as part of their ongoing activities to support the victims of the disaster. As Masaaki Suzuki writes in his own introduction to the disc, it has been compiled ‘in commemoration of the large number of people who lost their lives, and in the hope that the music will offer consolation to those who have suffered bereavement, help to heal their hurt, and give them the strength to rebuild the country for the next generation.’ The selection comprises arias from BCJ’s ongoing cycle of the complete church cantatas, as well as instrumental movements and the motet Komm, Jesu, komm. Also included are three organ chorales, recorded by Masaaki Suzuki especially for this release. The disc is being sold for the benefit of ‘TOHOKU HELP’, a local relief effort organized by the Sendai Christian Alliance, with the performers donating their royalties and BIS Records contributing the same amount.

On a new disc to celebrate the 2012 Diamond Jubilee, The King's Singers present a selection of works from the past 500 years written in honour of the great Monarchs of Britain.   Starting with works for (and in some cases by) Henry VIII, the programme covers the Elizabethan 'Triumphs of Oriana' by composers such as Gibbons, Mundy and Dowland; a very Victorian selection of dedicatory works by Elgar, Parry and Parratt; choral arrangements from the opera 'Glorianna' by Benjamin Britten; and a new piece by Paul Drayton that comically pens 'A Rough Guide to the Royal Succession'. Drayton is perhaps best known to fans of The King's Singers as the composer of their much-loved encore work Masterpiece.

Foliations – Stockholm Chamber Brass:Bach:Foliations – variations on ‘La Folia’ for brass quintetArnold:Brass Quintet, Op.73Bozza:Sonatine for brass quintetLindberg:Condor Canyon for trombone and brass quintet*Linkola:Brass Quintet No.2At the release in 1995 of one of their first records, Clockworks (BIS-CD-699), the reviewer in American Record Guide wrote ‘I cannot imagine that a better brass quintet has ever existed.’ 14 years later, Stockholm Chamber Brass is still one of the top ensembles in its field, with an undiminished eagerness to explore and develop the repertoire for brass quintet. Over the years, this ambition has manifested itself in a number of works and arrangements written especially for – and sometimes by – the ensemble. On the present disc, Foliations (a contraction of ‘Folia’ and ‘Variations’) by the American composer Jan Bach (b. 1937) is such a work. Based on the famous Renaissance tune La Folia, it is a set of 18 variations which the composer describes as a ‘sandwich’: the opening and closing movements are fixed, but the remaining movements are to be used ‘as a source from which any number may be played and in any order. The musicians make their own choice how the work will be performed.’ For the present disc, Stockholm Chamber Brass has chosen to divide the work into four portions, serving them up as interfoliations between the other compositions on offer. These include Arnold’s exuberant Quintet from 1961, Bozza’s humorous and agile Sonatine (1951) and Finnish composer Jukka Linkola’s colourful and rhythmically vital Brass Quintet No. 2, in which the composer’s affection for the neo-classical music of Honegger, Poulenc and Stravinsky is clearly audible. Also included is a work for trombone and brass quintet by the ensemble’s fellow Swede and brass-player Christian Lindberg. Its title, Condor Canyon, is inspired by Lindberg’s initial perception of its themes ‘like huge, wonderful birds high up in the clouds’, and the present recording offered the composer the opportunity to unpack his instrument and soar along with the players of Stockholm Chamber Brass.

A new release from Polyphony, with Stephen Layton at the helm, always brings with it an assurance of singing of the highest possible calibre. Bring together a choir of such quality and the composer responsible for some of the most beautiful, transcendent music ever written, and the resultant disc is surely what must be one of, if not the most spectacular releases of the year.New works from Arvo Pärt are invariably cherished, and this disc contains no fewer than five world premiere recordings—Dopo la vittoria, Nunc dimittis, Littlemore Tractus, My heart's in the Highlands and Salve Regina. It was recorded in the presence of the enraptured composer earlier this year at the Temple Church, London.

This disc completes the cycle of Tchaikovsky's symphonies with Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra conducted by Neeme Järvi, a cycle which as a whole can be described as resolutely unsentimental, with interpretations aiming to rid these popular scores of the melodramatic excesses that have become part of a performance tradition during more than 100 years in concert halls and on disc. This quality has been remarked upon by reviewers, who described Symphony No.1 as 'superb ... liberated from all the slag of sugary romanticism' (Classics Today France.com) and regarding No.4 wrote 'With immense skill and without making any concessions to the pathetic, Neeme Järvi grants the work its full magnitude. A reading at once rich in nuances and carved in rock ...' (Le Monde de la Musique). Another acclaimed instalment was Symphony No.2 ‘Little Russian’, hailed in Gramophone as ‘an outstanding performance … beautifully played and paced and immaculately recorded.’ Besides symphonic works, the previous five discs in the cycle have included a number of smaller scores, from favourites such as Francesca da Rimini and the Serenade for Strings to rarities. The present instalment also includes a number of shorter works, among which the dances from Eugen Onegin will be familiar to many. Two less well-known works connected with the stage are also represented here, with extracts from The Voyevoda and from the music to the play Dmitri the Pretender and Vassily Shuisky. Equally unusual is the brief Serenade, written in 1872 in honour of Nikolai Rubinstein, the tireless champion of Tchaikovsky’s music who conducted the first performances of a large number of his works. The opening work on this disc is one of these: the Third Symphony, nick-named ‘The Polish’ on behalf of its final movement, with the tempo marking Tempo di Polacca.
