Although generally known as the ‘Vespers’ in English, Rachmaninov’s great contribution to the history of Russian sacred music is, in fact, a setting of the services of Vespers, Matins and the First Hour as they are celebrated in the Russian Orthodox Church and known as the Vsenoshchnoe Bdenie, the ‘All-Night Vigil’. The services of Matins and the First Hour are those of the following day, sung directly after Vespers (which is begun approximately at sunset) ‘by anticipation’. This procedure is characteristic of the Russian rather than the Greek Church, since in the latter the Divine Liturgy is celebrated directly after Matins, served early in the morning. In cathedral and parish churches the Vigil is generally celebrated in an abbreviated form (lasting, nevertheless, for two hours or more) on Saturdays and the eves of major feasts – it is only in monasteries that it is celebrated fully, thus meriting its name.

Each instrument is primus inter pares, every note is significant …’ is how the scholar Alfred Einstein described W.A. Mozart’s Divertimento in E flat major for string trio. What other work could then be more suitable for the first disc of a star-studded ensemble such as Trio Zimmermann, in which each member is very definitely first among equals? Composed in the same year as the three final symphonies, Mozart’s only real trio for violin, viola and cello is a weighty work – six movements and close to 50 glorious minutes of music – and the fact that Mozart chose the title Divertimento (from the Italian divertire: to amuse) for a piece of these dimensions has often been remarked upon. But to Mozart, there was no real dividing line between ‘serious’ art and pleasure or amusement – and so, to quote Einstein once more, he gave us ‘the most perfect, finest thing that has ever been heard in this world’. To round off the disc, Frank Peter Zimmermann, Antoine Tamestit and Christian Poltéra have chosen to record Franz Schubert’s first contribution to the string trio genre, the opening – and only complete – movement (Allegro) of his String Trio in B flat major, D 471, written in 1816 when the composer was only nineteen.

He also has studied with several pianists, including Leon Fleisher, Mitsuko Uchida, Richard Goode, Alicia de Larrocha, Maria Joao Pires, Leslie Howard, Dominique Merlet and Aldo Ciccolini. He has performed in major concert venues including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center in New York, Wigmore Hall in London, Philharmonie and Konzerthaus in Berlin, Gewandhaus in Leipzig, Salle Olivier Messiaen in Paris, AuditorioNacional in Madrid, Sala Mozart in Zaragoza, Suntory Hall in Tokyo. His performances with orchestras include the Cleveland Orchestra, Finnish Radio Symphony, Israel Philharmonic, Dresden Philharmonic, Ile de France National Orchestra, Brazilian Symphony and New Japan Philharmonic. Passionate about contemporary music, Kotaro has performed world and national premieres of works by Toru Takemitsu, Mutsuo Shishido, Renaud Gagneux, Thierry Escaich, Thierry Huillet, Einojuhani Rautavaara and Francesco Milita… Iberia 12 nouvelles impressions en quatre cahiers T.105 (1905-1908) Albéniz, initially an incomparable virtuoso, acquired a wonderful mastery of composition. Although he was nothing like Liszt, his generous abundance of ideas reminds us of him. Albéniz was the first to capture the widespread melancholy and special moods of his native country (he was Catalan). Few pieces of music approach ‘El Albaicín’, in the first book of Iberia, with its atmosphere of a doleful guitar in the night and its sudden arrousals, like nervous jolts. Without actually reproducing popular themes outright, this music comes from one who grew up with them, heard and assimilated them to the point of including them in his music with no perceptible line of demarcation. Eritaña from the fourth book of Iberia, portrays morning joy, the fortuitous finding of an inn with cool wine. A constantly changing crowd goes by, tossing out bursts of laughter to the rhythmic jingling of skirts. Never has music attained such varied, colourful impressions: one’s eyes close as though dazzled by too many images. Claude Debussy, in his review of the Concerts Colonne, 29 Octobre 1913, published in the Journal of the Société Internationale de Musique, 1 December 2013.
