Volume 57 in Hyperion’s Romantic Piano Concerto series turns up another ‘discovery’: the music of Swedish composer Adolf Wiklund. These little-known but lusciously tuneful works are characterized by big-boned, symphonic gestures reminiscent of Rachmaninov, yet tempered with the Nordic clarity of Grieg. Wiklund’s two piano concertos are central to his output, and in fact they enjoyed considerable popularity in Sweden until as recently as fifty years ago, when modernist sensibilities deemed them unfashionable. This glittering performance from Martin Sturfält and the Helsingborg Symphony Orchestra, directed by brilliant violinist-turned-conductor Andrew Manze, is bound to bring this unfairly neglected music back into general currency.

A real event and highlight of Onyx's Autumn schedule - the first collaboration on disc of long-time recital partners and virtuoso soloists in their own right, Russian Viktoria Mullova and French pianist Katia Labeque. Recorded in ideal studio conditions at IRCAM, Paris, December 2005. Fascinating programme spanning 100 years from the rarely played late Schubert Fantasy to Ravel's 1927 Violin Sonata and Stravinsky's reworking of Pulcinella in the Suite Italienne of 1933. Mullova and Labeque have toured this programme many times and will do so again this. "The playing is deeply rewarding in their glittering accounts of the Stravinsky suite - the 1933 transcription of Pulicinella - and the Ravel sonata, Mullova revelling in the jazzy glissandi of the central blues movement. If one has heard more inward accounts of the Schubert, the virtuosity here is never in doubt, and the Clara piece is a charming rarity. Highly recommended." - The Sunday Times (UK)
