Canto Novello – songs of a spiritual, social and, above all, musical renewal: a melting pot, a conglomerate of the centuries-old tradition of the music of the Christian church and the rich poetry of the people, individual, powerful, and stirring. The ensembles Ars Choralis Coeln and Oni Wytars came together especially for this project in which they could combine their different specialities – enchanting tonal beauty and temperamental instrumental virtuosity – in order to bring to life again the fascinatingly multilayered sound image of vernacular sacred music in the towns of fourteenth-century Upper Italy: entirely in the sense of the “compagnie delle laude.”

The ensemble Les Cornets Noirs (named after their black, leather covered cornettos) has unearthed some real musical treasures: the collection of Gustaf Düben, chapel-master at the court of Sweden, encompasses more than 2300 musical works that are partly composers’ autographs, partly scribal copies. Düben must have started collecting autographs of established German and Italian composers already during his studies in Germany, and subsequently his position as court chapel-master undoubtedly afforded him many occasions to acquire or copy valuable music. Later, the Düben Collection wandered from Stockholm to the University Library in Uppsala. From the extensive repertoire, Les Cornets Noirs, who play with masterly virtuosity and mellow sound, have selected sonatas intended for “cornetti” as well as other compositionally mature chamber music works and sacred concertos (bass: Wolf Matthias Friedrich) that reflect a broad spectrum of the musical landscapes in Germany, Italy, and the Baltic Sea region of the seventeenth century.

'A keenly dramatic and powerfully projected account that has the listener on the edge of his or her seat. It must be numbered among the finest performances he has given us. The excitement and virtuosity are second to none' (The Penguin Guide to Compact Discs)   'Virtuosity of a kind to which few other pianists could pretend' (Gramophone)   'A spectacular version, sumptuous in sound, brilliant in execution' (Classic CD)

A real event and highlight of Onyx's Autumn schedule - the first collaboration on disc of long-time recital partners and virtuoso soloists in their own right, Russian Viktoria Mullova and French pianist Katia Labeque. Recorded in ideal studio conditions at IRCAM, Paris, December 2005. Fascinating programme spanning 100 years from the rarely played late Schubert Fantasy to Ravel's 1927 Violin Sonata and Stravinsky's reworking of Pulcinella in the Suite Italienne of 1933. Mullova and Labeque have toured this programme many times and will do so again this. "The playing is deeply rewarding in their glittering accounts of the Stravinsky suite - the 1933 transcription of Pulicinella - and the Ravel sonata, Mullova revelling in the jazzy glissandi of the central blues movement. If one has heard more inward accounts of the Schubert, the virtuosity here is never in doubt, and the Clara piece is a charming rarity. Highly recommended." - The Sunday Times (UK)
