Pierwszy wielki eksperymentator i jeden z pierwszych wielkich gitarzystów rockowych. Twórca techniki gry na gitarze zwanej twang, polegającej na grze tremolo na basowych strunach gitary elektrycznej przy jednoczesnym zastosowaniu kamery pogłosowej.
