Piotr Czajkowski (1840–1893) kompozytor rosyjski uważany za jednego z najwybitniejszych twórców nurtu narodowego XIX wieku. W swoich utworach łączył założenia programowe romantyzmu z klasycystyczną formą. Wyróżniał się wśród rodzimych twórców tego okresu. W jego dziełach dostrzega się widoczne wpływy zachodnie. Sam za niedościgniony wzór uważał W.A. Mozarta. Autor symfoniczny, operowy oraz baletowy. W swojej twórczości szczególną wartość nadawał psychologizmowi, przez co w wyjątkowo wyrazisty sposób ukazywał dramatyzm wykreowanych przez siebie postaci. Styl jego symfonii na przełomie lat ulegał licznym przemianom, początkowo trzymając się wyznaczonych schematów, aby z upływem czasu w układanych kompozycjach prezentować coraz to śmielsze muzyczne posunięcia.
