Trudno wyobrazić sobie Boże Narodzenie bez choinki, św. Mikołaja i prezentów. Bez pierwszej gwiazdki i wigilijnego stołu. Ale także bez muzyki. Bo czas Narodzenia Pańskiego to czas radości. A świętowanie bez muzyki nie jest przecież żadnym świętowaniem.Kolęda, pastorałka, „Christmas Carol, chants de Noel” (albo po prostu noel), “Weihnachtslied, canto natalizio”. Nazwy różne, w zależności od szerokości geograficznej, oznaczają to samo – pieśni związane z tematem Bożego Narodzenia, śpiewane od 24 grudnia do 2 lutego (święta Matki Bożej Gromnicznej). Tak chce nasza tradycja, choć w rzeczywistości repertuar bożonarodzeniowy „wchłaniamy” znacznie wcześniej. Już na początku grudnia wpadamy w prawdziwy szał i, chcąc nie chcąc, poddajemy się świątecznej gorączce. Ma w niej udział także muzyka, bowiem obok śpiewanych od pokoleń kolęd co chwila dodawane są do tego repertuaru kolejne bożonarodzeniowe „przeboje”. Niektóre umierają wraz z wyrzucaną choinką i topniejącym śniegiem, inne powracają za rok – nabierają mocy, dołączają do grupy żelaznych standardów.My łączymy przeszłość z teraźniejszością, bo zdaje się, że nie mamy innego wyjścia. Boże Narodzenie inspirowało wielkich kompozytorów, którzy pozostawili nam nieśmiertelne dzieła. Barokowym twórcom nie brakowało wszak weny. Bo cóż to za Boże Narodzenie bez oratoriów Bacha i Schutza, „Mesjasza” Handla, „Mszy na pasterkę” Charpentiera (zainspirowanej prostymi, ludowymi francuskimi kolędami) czy pastoralnego koncertu Corellego. Wysłuchamy ich po raz setny i po raz kolejny odkryjemy prawdę oczywistą – są genialne.Ale jak tu przeżyć dziś święta bez „White Christmas” (nawet jeżeli nie będą białe), „Jingle Bells”, „Feliz Navidad” czy „Let It Snow!”... Czy można nie zanucić „Lulajże, Jezuniu”?Gdy w styczniu przemija świąteczna gorączka, mamy prawdziwie dosyć tych wszystkich okolicznościowych szlagierów. Gdzieś jednak w środku jesieni zaczynamy za nimi tęsknić, by w grudniu ponownie rzucić się na nie, jakbyśmy odkrywali je po raz pierwszy. I wszystko zaczyna się od początku. I tak co roku.
