Pod wdzięczną nazwą Malija ukrywają się europejscy muzycy jazzowi, którzy dużej części fanów jazzu pozostają pewnie nieznani. Choć nie powinni.Lider, angielski saksofonista Mark Lockheart od 80-tych lat brał udział w niezliczonej ilości projektów. Jasper Hoiby to filar jednego z najlepszych europejskich triowych składów - Phronesis, którego jest liderem. Pianista Liam Noble najbardziej znany jest ze współpracy z Ingrid Laubrock, z którą nagrał kilka płyt dla wytwórni Intakt, ale także z Drew Gressem i Tomem Rainey'em.Combo Malija wydało płytę o szlifie uniwersalnym, kameralny jazz, w swoim rdzeniu raczej ascetyczny, wielki od pierwszych taktów otwierającego "Squared" i ani przez moment nienużący. Czasem słychać tu fascynację filigranową formą spod znaku wspaniałego przecież albumu "Red Lanta" Arta Lande i Jana Garbarka ("Unknown"). Innym razem akordowa pianistyka Noble'a, będąca swoistym fundamentem, na którym Lockheart buduje prześliczne saksofonowe partie, może przywodzić najlepszych jazzowych klawiszowców ("The Pianist").W dwóch utworach usłyszymy znakomity kwartet smyczkowy Ligeti Quartet w składzie Mandhira de Saram, Patrick Dawkins – violins, Richard Jones – viola, Val Welbanks – cello ("Mr Wrack" i "With One Voice"). Robi się wtedy transowo i drapieżnie.Gdyby płyta nie została wydana przez niezależną wytwórnię, mogłaby pewnie zainteresować bardzo szerokie grono słuchaczy. Płyty nagranej z taką kulturą muzyczną nie miałem w odtwarzaczu od dawna. The collections of airs published in France by Ballard between 1608 and 1643 contain 17 airs on Italian words, of which six are in the polyphonic collections, six are for voice with lute tablature and five for voice with guitar tablature. Taking account of variants and different versions, polyphonic or monodic, of the same pieces, we are left with ten texts – a rather insignificant group amid a repertoire of over 2,000 French airs. The present recording manages to include all these ten texts, thereby presenting almost all the Italian airs published by French composers during Louis XIII’s reign.  The musicians of Il Festino have interspersed these airs with a number of instrumental pieces and songs to Spanish texts of the same period. All the Italian airs are by three of the foremost French composers of the time, each of whom moved in court and salon circles.
