This second BBC Philharmonic Karpowicz disc complements the first with three earlier works. Composed in the first two years of the 20th century, Karpowicz's 40-minute Rebirth Symphony is very much of its time – not just in its ambitious programmatic span from existential despair to world-saving apotheosis, but in its opulent post-Tchaikovskian idiom. Though he clearly overreached himself, this is a needto- know piece for anyone interested in the aspirational Zeitgeist prevalent before the First World War. Most immediately appealing, perhaps, is the slow movement, which features a tender song-like theme that British listeners may connect with the hymn 'My song is love unknown'. The symphonic prologue Bianca da Molena is extracted from music for a now forgotten Polish play; not surprisingly it contains many echoes of Wagner. The Serenade for String Orchestra is an apprentice piece with a certain charm, notably in the vaguely Parsifalian slow movement, which helps to compensate for the disappointment of the cursory finale. The BBC Philharmonic's playing and Chandos's recording uphold their customary high standards.

It may seem surprising that after three decades of ‘early music’ research, critical discoveries can still be made about a great composer such as Mozart and particularly discoveries around his well-known masterpieces. This recording presents the première recording of the Grande Sonate, an anonymous arrangement for fortepiano and basset clarinet of Mozart’s beloved Clarinet Quintet in A major, K.581. Both the Clarinet Quintet and the Concerto in A major, K.622, were originally written for an instrument called the basset clarinet, which has four more chromatic notes at the bottom of its range than an ordinary clarinet. Since the manuscripts to both pieces were lost, clarinettists have had to make educated guesses about the passages that may have included these low notes. Significantly, this arrangement includes some of these basset notes, making it an important source for those wishing to restore the piece to its original form. In its incarnation as a sonata, it becomes a wonderful piece of chamber music which is especially compelling when played on instruments like those Mozart and Stadler (for whom it was composed) knew.

"David Bowie Conversation Piece" to pięciopłytowy box i jego cyfrowy odpowiednik. Wydawnictwo dokumentuje procesy twórcze Davida Bowiego w latach 1968-1969 poprzez jego domowe dema, sesje dla radia BBC, studyjne nagrania z gitarzystą Johnem "Hutchem" Hutchinsonem  oraz eksperymentalna trupą Feathers. Kolekcja ukazuje się przy okazji 50. rocznicy singla "Space Oddity" oraz drugiego imiennego albumu Davida Bowiego (zwanego też "Space Oddity"). Zestaw "David Bowie Conversation Piece" zawiera 12 wcześniej niepublikowanych numerów/nagrań demo z wczesnego okresu działalności Bowiego, jak również nowy miks albumu "David Bowie" (zwanego też "Space Oddity") autorstwa wieloletniego producenta i współpracownika Bowiego, Tony'ego Visconti. Do nowego miksu dodano utwór "Conversation Piece", który oryginalnie miał znaleźć się na płycie, ale z uwagi na ograniczenia formatu winylowego ostatecznie z niego zrezygnowano. "Mieliśmy niezłą frajdę, odnajdując te wszystkie skarby" - opowiada Visconti. "Tym razem miałem też więcej czasu na cyzelowanie materiału, w jednym miejscu pojawił się więc gitarowy akcent, w drugim puzon, a jeszcze gdzie indziej Marc Bolan w chórkach. Generalnie bardziej skupiliśmy się na detalach, które przeoczyliśmy poprzednim razem, kiedy w ciągu tygodnia musieliśmy zmiksować większość albumu. W tych detalach przebija się 22-letni David Bowie, który wkrótce miał podbić świat." Do boksu dołączono 120-stronicową książeczkę wypełnioną pamiątkami z prywatnej kolekcji byłego menedżera Davida, nieżyjącego już Kena Pitta jak również z archiwów samego Bowiego. Są to m.in. zdjęcia autorstwa takich artystów jak Ray Stevenson, Vernon Dewhurst, David Bebbington, Ken Pitt, Alec Byrne, Tony Visconti czy Jojanneke Claasen.
