In eight previous volumes Ronald Brautigam has traversed what is often called 'The New Testament of Piano Music', namely Beethoven's 32 numbered sonatas. The present disc may be regarded as an appendix to these, as it explores the composer's first attempts in the genre. It opens with the three Kurfürsten Sonatas from 1783, in which Beethoven – at the tender age of twelve – demonstrates a remarkable maturity. With influences from C.P.E. Bach's ground-breaking keyboard music, as well as the sonatas from Haydn's 'Sturm und Drang' perod, the pieces earn their nickname from being dedicated to Archduke Maximilian Friedrich, Kurfürst of Cologne and the employer of Beethoven's father. The Kurfürsten Sonatas were published upon completion, whereas the remaining, later pieces on this disc remained unpublished during Beethoven's lifetime. Zwei Sätze einer Sonatine and Zwei Stücke für Klavier (Orphika) – often called 'Leichte Sonate' – were composed as gifts to two friends from Beethoven's youth: Franz Wegeler and Eleonore von Breuning. In the case of the Two Easy Sonatinas, the manuscript scores were found among Beethoven's papers after his death. There is no proof that Beethoven really is the composer, however, and although they are usually dated as having been written around 1790, this is no more than an educated guess. As a whole, the pieces presented here are the earliest so far in this series, and Ronald Brautigam has consequently chosen to introduce a new instrument for his performances: a copy of a fortepiano by Johann Andreas Stein from 1788. The opportunity it provides of following the evolution of the piano during a momentous period in piano music and instrument building certainly adds to the attractions of this universally acclaimed series. But Brautigam's interpretations have a directness and urgency to them that far surpasses such considerations – as summed in a review in Classic FM Magazine of a recent instalment: 'Brautigam has more to say about the music than any recent cycle recorded on modern instruments… An outstanding disc of an outstanding series.'

Gil Scott-Heron (właściwie Gilbert Scott-Heron, ur. 1 kwietnia 1949 w Chicago, zm. 27 maja 2011 w Nowym Jorku) – amerykański muzyk i poeta. Znany jest najlepiej ze swojego dorobku z końca lat sześćdziesiątych i siedemdziesiątych. Występował wtedy z zaangażowanymi politycznie melorecytacjami, od drugiej płyty (Pieces of Man) jego muzyka zaczęła być coraz bardziej zaaranżowana i melodyjna. W swoich tekstach poruszał tematy rasizmu, wojny w Wietnamie, nierówności społecznej. W swojej muzyce łączył elementy jazzu i funka. Uważany jest za jednego z prekursorów rapu. W latach 70. zaangażowany był w działalność Czarnych Panter. Popularność zdobył m.in. utworami: "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised", "The Bottle", "Winter in America" oraz "Lady Day And John Coltrane". Jego ojciec Gil Scott był jednym z pierwszych czarnoskórych piłkarzy w lidze angielskiej. Od 2001 do 2002 roku odbywał wyrok więzienia za posiadanie kokainy. W roku 2006 przyznał się, że jest nosicielem wirusa HIV. The Revolution Will Not Be Televised to kompilacyjny album amerykańskiego wokalisty Gil Scott-Heron, wydany w 1974 roku przez Flying Dutchman Records. Album bierze swoją nazwę od utworu Scott-Heron z 1971 roku o tej samej nazwie. Zawiera nagrania poprzednio prezentowane na pierwszych trzech albumach Scotta-Herona dla wytwórni Flying Dutchman, Small Talk at 125th i Lenox (1970), Pieces of a Man (1971) i Free Will (1972), które zostały wyprodukowane przez producenta jazzowego Bob Thiele. Dvorák's music for violin and piano comes from many periods in his career. An early Sonata in A minor of 1873 is lost. Of the works which do survive, several, including the Notturno and Four Romantic Pieces, are skilful arrangements of earlier works (the Notturno is a reworking of the central section of the E minor String Quartet, while the Four Pieces were originally written for viola and piano).There are two extensive compositions exclusively for violin and piano: the Sonata in F major, interestingly designated by the composer as being for 'piano and violin', and the popular Sonatina in G major, composed during his stay in America. Both are models of perfection in this most relaxed of chamber-music genres.
