Robert Schumann carried children in his heart. The various compositions that, directly or indirectly, deal with children and their environment are telling. The Kinderszenen op. 15, twelve short pieces which evoke the child’s universe and its various moods in an extraordinarily striking manner, are beyond praise. Unlike Kinderszenen or Waldszenen, Album für die Jugend op. 68 has a rather didactic purpose and the volume is indeed meant to be rendered by children. The 43 short pieces have been arranged in two sections: 18 “für Kleinere” and 25 “für Erwachsenere”. Although some pieces may be too demanding for the averagely talented child, other titles have become a vital part of piano repertoire for children.Etudes Symphoniques op. 13 (1834/35) proves Schumann to have an unbridled imagination and to be a brilliant craftsman as well. Coming after Beethoven’s Diabelli-variations, it can be seen as another milestone in the art of variation with respect to piano music. For the present recording, Jan Vermeulen opted for an instrument made by Johann Nepomuk Tröndlin (1790-1862) and built according to the Vienna tradition in Leipzig between 1830 and 1835. Vermeulen explains his approach to Schumann as follows: “In this recording, I have tried to approach Schumann’s metronome markings as closely as possible. It was a time-consuming and not a self-evident activity to get rid of automatism and dubious traditions, but I am convinced that this effort has got me so far as to approach Schumann’s original intentions.”

Following the resounding success of Jonathan Plowright’s 2010 Hommage à Chopin, the acclaimed British pianist becomes the first artist to record the album of works written and published in homage to one of the early twentieth century’s most fascinating figures, Polish pianist, composer and politician Ignacy Jan Paderewski. Of the twenty-two works on this recording, from composers including Bartók, MartinÍ and Milhaud, sixteen were included in the memorial piano album Homage to Paderewski published by Boosey & Hawkes in New York in 1942. A further six pieces written for Paderewski also feature, including a Mazurka for two pianos by Britten originally intended for the volume (Britten misunderstood the commission, which specified solo piano), for which Plowright is joined by Aaron Shorr. These diverse works are performed with flair and dedication.

Jean-Efflam Bavouzet’s vivid and personal interpretations of Debussy’s complete works for piano are available for the first time in an attractive five-volume box set, selling for the price of three CDs. This is the series that put Bavouzet on the map, and established him firmly as a leading and internationally acclaimed pianist.Disc 1 offers Debussy’s two books of Préludes, complemented by the only recently rediscovered and rarely recorded late prelude entitled Les soirs illuminés par l’ardeur du charbon. Gramophone wrote of this disc: ‘Bavouzet commands all the shading, nuance and timbral sensitivity one expects in Debussy, together with virtuoso flair and characterful spontaneity.’The second disc reveals a more reflective, private period in Debussy’s compositional career. In the dedication of the three Images, Debussy wrote: ‘These pieces would feel extremely nervous entering “the brilliantly lit salons” regularly patronised by people who don’t like music. They are rather “conversations” between the Piano and Oneself.’ LA Times wrote: ‘In what may turn out to be the greatest complete recorded survey of the composer’s piano music yet, Jean-Efflam Bavouzet… plays with such bracing clarity that hearing the early Romantic pieces, one feels like jumping into an icy pond after an hour in the sauna.’On Disc 3, the music moves to a more playful strand in Debussy’s output, with generally shorter pieces of the salon genre, including the two famous collections Children’s Corner and Suite bergamasque. Of Disc 4, which won a Gramophone Award in 2009, the magazine Pianist wrote: ‘Trust me, both the Images and Études easily conquer any other modern recording.’The fifth and concluding disc brings together the ballets Khamma, Jeux and La Boîte à joujoux, all far better known in their orchestral guise, but here performed in Debussy’s initial versions for solo piano. This disc was an Editor’s Choice in the magazines Gramophone and Classic FM and nominated for a Gramophone Award in 2010, in the instrumental category.

The Brodsky Quartet celebrates its fortieth anniversary this year. Formed in 1972, the Quartet quickly emerged at the forefront of the international chamber music scene. It has performed more than 2000 concerts and made more than fifty highly acclaimed recordings. Now exclusive Chandos artists, the Brodsky players are releasing their second disc on Chandos with guest soloists Jean-Efflam Bavouzet and the harpist Sioned Williams. The Trio for piano, violin, and cello is an early work, written before Debussy established his own very distinctive musical language heard in pieces such as La Mer. Another early piece, Rêverie, for piano, was written by the young, struggling composer at a time when he was trying to make a living in Paris. The easiest market to break into for a composer was the salon, where songs and not-too-taxing piano music were in demand. Rêverie was one of several charming and tuneful works that Debussy wrote for this scene. In a somewhat different league, the String Quartet is considered a defining work in the history of chamber music. Sensual and impressionistic, it employs a cyclic structure that constituted a split from the rules of classical form and pointed the way forward. In the words of Pierre Boulez, Debussy freed chamber music from ‘rigid structure, frozen rhetoric, and rigid aesthetics’. The Deux Danses, made up of the ‘Danse sacrée’ and ‘Danse profane’, complete the disc. At the end of the nineteenth century, the Parisian instrument makers Pleyel invented a ‘chromatic harp’ which dispensed with pedals and achieved the full chromatic compass from two rows of strings that slanted across one another. Debussy was approached to write two pieces intended for a final examination of the Pleyel model. ‘Danse sacrée’ makes use of Church modes, while ‘Danse profane’ is a kind of sarabande. The ‘competition’ aspect of the pieces is highlighted by the fact that, after the opening introduction, the harpist has no more than six bars’ rest. As it happened, the Pleyel model never caught on, and the works are now always performed on a pedal harp.
