Jeden z najbliższych współpracowników legendarnego Cheta Bakera w jego ostatnim okresie, belgijski gitarzysta Philip Catherine swoją karierę muzyczną rozpoczął w latach sześćdziesiątych z Lou Bennett'em, później z Dexterem Gordonem i Stéphane Grapellim.Następnie, po nagraniu w 1971 roku swojego pierwszego albumu (Stream) był członkiem Jean-Luc Ponty Quintet z Joachimem Kühnem na fortepianie. Rok później poznał m.in. Johna Scofielda, Ran'a Blake'a i George'a Bensona.Współpracował także z tak znakomitymi artystami jak Billy Brooks, Edgar Bateman, John Lee, Gerry Brown, Larry Coryell, Alphonse Mouzon, Charlie Mariano, Niels Henning Orsted Pedersen, Kenny Drew, Toots Thielemans, Stéphane Grappelli, Charles Mingus, Tom Harrell, zespół rockowy Fokus, Alphonse Mouzon czy Miroslav Vitous.Jego najnowszy album "Philip Catherine Plays Cole Porter" jest kolejnym, jakże dystyngowanym krokiem w jego karierze. Pozostając wierny stylistyce wypracowanej przed laty nagrał niezwykle delikatną, aksamitną i romantyczną płytę.Nagrana została w kwartecie gitara akustyczna/kontrabas/fortepian/perkusja, dominuje na niej nastrój melancholii, nostalgii, choć czasami przebija typowa dla Cole'a Portera radosna lekość jak chociażby w "In The Still Of The Night".Wszyscy pamiętamy płyty z repertuarem wielkiego Cole'a Portera, chociażby "Oscar Peterson Plays the Cole Porter Songbook", "Stephane Grappelli Plays Cole Porter" czy najnowszą w stawce "The Cole Porter Mix" Patrici Barber.
