This collection of the complete chamber music of Poulenc shows the varying styles that he employed. From the jazzy, bitonal passages of the Sonata for Clarinet and Bassoon and the Sonata for Horn, Trumpet and Trombone which has been described as 'Pergolesi with his wig awry' (Roger Nichols, Grove) to the profound beauty of his last three sonatas for wind. All are extremely accessible. The Nash Ensemble gave a series of concerts of Poulenc's music at the Wigmore Hall earlier this year to great critical acclaim and Hyperion are delighted to be able to present this wonderful collection on this, Poulenc's centenary year.GRAMOPHONE EDITOR'S CHOICE; BBC CD REVIEW 'DISC OF THE MONTH' 'Thirteen pieces lovingly brought to life by the Nash Ensemble. For once, the word 'jewel-box' for the CD container sounds about right.' (BBC CD Review) 'Entrancing. It's hard to select the choicest treasures from this jewel box of Poulenc's most witty and vivacious, hauntingly melodic and touchingly heartfelt music, especially when it is played with such effervescence and devotion as here. The two masterpieces are the Sextet for Piano and Winds (1932) and the delectable "Mozartian" Trio for Piano, Oboe and Bassoon, played with dashing elan and soulful lyricism by the pianist Ian Brown and the Nash's brilliant wind principals. Richard Watkins's long-breathed account of the moving Elégie in memoriam Dennis Brain (1957) and Paul Watkins's noble-toned playing of the Cello Sonata (1940/48) are exceptional. But there is rapture, elation, zany high spirits in all of this music, dazzlingly played by the Nash Ensemble. Buy, buy, buy!' (The Sunday Times) 'A set which will surely and deservedly be popular.' (BBC Music Magazine) 'Thoroughly excellent' (The Observer) 'Those who treasure performances of this music should hear this recording to discover the insights which the very best of today's musicians bring to these scores' (Classic Express) 'An altogether first-class collection if Poulenc's very individual chamber music output played with real sensitivity ... .outstanding performances. The whole issue wins my enthusiastic recommendation: it bids fair to become the undisputed yardstick for the future.' (Gramophone) 'It would be hard to imagine more consistently on-target presentations of Poulenc’s chamber music or more appropriate sound reproduction. Highly recommended' (Fanfare, USA)

„Show Boat” Hammersteina i Kerna to prawdziwy klasyk amerykańskiego teatru muzycznego – opowieść o życiu na Mississipi w latach od 1880 do 1920 jest wzruszającą historią miłosną, ale też mocnym przypomnieniem o gorzkim dziedzictwie rasizmu. "Triumf! – stylowe, wartkie i kolorowe show, rzuciło publiczność na kolana, pozostawiając głośny i długi auplauz" (Chicago Classical Review). Wyjątkowa produkcja z San Francisco Opera zawiera  klasyczne piosenki takie jak: "Ol 'Man River" i "Can not Help Lovin 'Dat Man". Tracklista: 1. San Francisco Opera: Show Boat

The Bach Collegium Japan was founded by Masaaki Suzuki 20 years ago, in 1990, and the team’s cycle of Bach’s Cantatas was launched five years later, in November 1995. Now, 46 volumes and fifteen years later, the series has entered the final stretch but is still going as strong as ever. Reviews of recent volumes speak for themselves – ‘With Suzuki you can hear Bach's heart beat...’ the reviewer in International Record Review wrote in regards to Volume 40, while Volume 43 caused the critic in Fanfare to rhapsodize: ‘a set for the ages, not only performed with consummate style, historical considerations, and musical substance, but with a feeling for these seminal religious works that transcends the merely mechanical presentation that we so often - too often - hear.’ There is certainly nothing mechanical about the present performances, of three works which in emotional content range from the joyful vitality of the Advent cantata BWV36 to the meditations upon death and the leave-taking of this world which permeate BWV27. As always the opening choruses are of particular interest, for instance that of Cantata BWV47, a striking example of Bach’s skills in illustrating a text in music but also a highly complex composition in which the interplay between choir and orchestra is beautifully balanced. The soloists also have their share of  fine moments on this instalment. Hana Blažíková, dubbed ‘an ideal Bach soprano’ in International Record Review on account of her performance on the previous Cantata volume, performs the charming and playful aria ‘Auch mit gedämpften, schwachen Stimmen’ with solo violin, while Robin Blaze and Peter Kooij – both veterans of this series – each have received a true display piece in the form of the two arias of BWV27.

It was with performances and recordings of the music of Jean Sibelius, his great compatriot, that the Finnish conductor Osmo Vänskä first attracted the attention of a wider international audience. Beginning in the early 1990s, seminal recordings with the Lahti Symphony Orchestra of tone poems and the seven symphonies became synonymous with a new interpretative approach to the composer’s music, with words such as ‘clarity’, ‘intensity’ and ‘freshness’ reappearing in review after review. Vänskä has remained true to Sibelius (and BIS), and recordings made by him over the past 20 years form the backbone of the label’s newly completed Sibelius Edition, but in the meantime his international career has also flourished, including a highly successful partnership with the Minnesota Orchestra. On disc this has resulted in an acclaimed cycle of Beethoven’s symphonies, and most recently with a recording of Bruckner’s Fourth (‘Romantic’) Symphony, which in Pizzicato Magazine was described as ‘exceptional… without doubt one of the finest recordings of the work…’ Now, some 15 years after the appearance of his previous cycle of Sibelius’s symphonies, Vänskä has returned to the works in recording, and with his Minnesota players he has recorded the first disc in a new cycle. The Sibelius expert Robert Layton, in his introduction to the programme, presents the Second Symphony as ‘the symphony by which many music lovers find their way to Sibelius’, and in his discussion of the Fifth he quotes the composer himself, in a comment about symphonic form: ‘a river with innumerable tributaries feeding it before it broadens majestically and flows into the sea’.

PROKOFIEV’S THREE GREAT PIANO SONATAS COMPOSEDDURING THE SECOND WORLD WAR• ‘Dynamite, explosive and volatile, phenomenal… performance of such rare quality’ – these are just some of the superlatives used to describe Denis Kozhukhin’sProkofiev interpretations. His is a name to watch out for.• Debut recording from a young Russian pianist who wowed the public and critics with his recent Prokofiev piano concerto cycle with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra.• He embarks upon a major tour recital to Japan in January, playing repertoire that includes the complete Prokofiev piano sonatas.• In May 2013 he will perform Sonatas 6–8 at the South Bank Centre’s The Rest is Noise festival.• He is now in demand with many leading orchestras.• Denis Kozhukhin won the coveted first prize at the prestigious Queen Elisabeth Competition in Belgium in 2010.• ‘This was remarkable; a performance of such rare quality it is difficult to light on vocabulary that might define the experience. There could be some mileage in recounting the audience’s stunned reaction as Kozhukhin wrestled with and overcame passage after furious passage, gathering tension as he went by virtue of the sheer physical strain required to realise the notes Prokofiev put on the page.’ The Scotsman – review of Kozhukhin’s performance of Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto no.2.• ‘The performance was dynamite: explosive and volatile, with phenomenal playing from Kozhukhin, but all within a lucidly defined context and structure.’ Herald, Scotland (review of the same performance).

This boxed set edition includes previously unreleased recordings and an ample booklet (88 pages) with full liner notes in English, French and German. Released on five separate discs, Noriko Ogawa’s traversal of the solo piano music of Claude Debussy has been receiving consistent praise in the international music press, with distinctions such as Gramophone Editor’s Choice (twice); a top recommendation (‘10/10/10’) on the German website Klassik Heute, ‘Recording of the Month’ on MusicWeb International.com and ‘CD of the Week’ on BBC Radio 3 CD Review. Along with general acclaim for Noriko Ogawa’s approach to the music (‘a Debussy interpreter of exceptional class’ – International Record Review; ‘a most elegant, scrupulously sensitive interpreter’ – Gramophone), performances of individual works and sets of works have been singled out. In BBC Music Magazine Ogawa’s Images and Children's Corner were named benchmark recordings, while Classica-Répertoire placed the second book of Préludes and the set of Études among the most important and convincing versions in the discography. Less well-known works have also been cited, such as the piano score of the children’s ballet Boîte à joujoux (‘A superlative performance… worth the price of the disc alone’ – Gramophone) and Debussy’s own transcription for solo piano of Six Èpigraphes antiques (‘the pianist creates a poetic atmosphere which leaves the listener breathless’ – Classica-Répertoire). The original five discs have now been brought together as a boxed set with the addition of a sixth CD, containing Noriko Ogawa’s previously unreleased recordings of Debussy’s only work for piano and orchestra, the Fantaisie pour piano et orchestre from 1890, and five school fugues, written as part of Debussy’s training at the Paris Conservatoire, and transcribed from the original manuscripts for this occasion.

Beethoven's Ninth Symphony is a landmark in the history of music, changing the concept of what a symphony could be. The use of solo singers and a chorus in the final movement was revolutionary, and the emotional journey to a glorious vision of a world of love and tolerance paved the way for idealistic symphonies to come.   Reviews:    'simply masterful Beethoven ... Capped by a magisterial account of the Ninth Symphony, this is the Beethoven set for our time. Even if you already have umpteen other recordings of these works, you really owe it to yourself to hear this new set. It's a deeply satisfying musical experience' Chicago Tribune   CD of the Week 'this recording has impressed every one of the CD Review team ... there is a feeling of immediacy and drama tempered with vision and maturity as though Haitink's long career has been leading towards this time where he can combine impetuosity and youthful enthusiasm with the wisdom of age and experience' BBC Radio 3 CD Review   'enough orchestral punch to knock a listener senseless ... we are caught in the grip of a performance of quite uncommon fervour. Feel the warmth of Finley's opening bass solo, marvel at the open throats of the London Symphony Chorus' The Times   'a magnificent performance of the Ninth, done with total commitment under Haitink's inspiring leadership ... with splendid chorus and soloists in full cry, and orchestra in blazing form, all is thrillingly right. Every detail of the ever-astonishing score is given its value in a reading of passionate conviction' Sunday Times   'an incredible recording' MusicOMH
