Robert Wyatt to żyjąca legenda współczesnej muzyki. Brał udział w nagraniu czterech znakomitych płyt Soft Machine, a jego późniejszy projekt Matching Mole, choć nigdy nie nagrał płyty wybitnej to znakomitymi koncertami przeszedł do historii jazz-rocka. Życie Wyatta naznaczone jest jednak tragedią, która wydarzyła się w 1973 roku. Podczas jednej z imprez muzyk wypadł z okna, tracąc władzę w nogach. Materiał z "Rock Bottom" naznaczony był właśnie ową tragedią i w dużym stopniu powstał bezpośrednio po niej. To muzyka przesiąknięta emocjami, momentami pełna nostalgii ("Sea Song"), momentami żarliwie rozimprowizowana jazzowym tembrem "Little Red Riding Hood Hit the Road", niekiedy zwyczajnie eterycznie piękna - "Alifie". "Rock Bottom" to muzyczna metafizyka, wznosząca dzieło życia Wyatta do rangi sztuki.
