„How I Got Over” to następca wydanego w kwietniu 2008 roku albumu „Rising Down”. Magazyn Rolling Stone na miesiąc przed jego wydaniem przyznał mu maksymalną liczbę gwiazdek, w recenzji chwaląc raperów za wrażliwość bliską osobom biednym. Jest to dziewiąty album w dorobku grupy, na płycie znajdują się przeróbki: „Dear God” Monsters Of Folk, z gościnnym udziałem Yima Yamesa, „Book Of Right On” Joanny Newsom (jako „Right On”) i „Again” Johna Legenda (w wersji Roots noszące tytuł „Doin' It Again”). Tytuł płyty został zaczerpnięty ze standardu gospel Clary Ward (spopularyzowanego przez Mahalię Jackson). Członkowie The Roots opisują utwory zamieszczone na płycie jako „próbę odnalezienia nadziei w przygnębiających czasach braku nadziei”.Głównym singlem będzie „Dear God 2.0”, przeróbka utworu z repertuaru grupy Monsters Of Folk („Dear God”). Obecnie zespół przygotowuje się do europejskiej trasy koncertowej, która zajmie im najbliższy rok.
