It was in October 1853 that the 20-year-old Johannes Brahms completed his Piano Sonata No. 3 in F minor, while staying with Robert and Clara Schumann in Düsseldorf. The work had occupied him for some months – at least since the summer of the same year, when he had encountered Franz Liszt, and had heard his recently completed B minor Sonata. Strictly speaking, he may only have heard parts of it: according to some reports, Brahms fell asleep during the performance… It is tempting to see the younger man’s sonata as a response to Liszt’s work, but whatever the case may be, its hero­ic scale, unconventional layout and high quality made it one of the most impressive sonatas since those of Beethoven and Schubert. Signifi­cantly, Brahms never wrote another piano sonata, as if he had said as much as he wanted to say in that genre. Instead he would go on to compose in more concentrated formats, but he also wrote a series of large-scale sets of variations, among which the Handel Variations must be considered his crowning achievement. Completed in September 1861 and dedicated to Clara Schumann, the work shows Brahms at the height of his powers, confirming his position as the preeminent preserver and representative of tradition. In fact even Wagner saw its significance when Brahms played it to him, com­menting that it showed what could still be done with the old forms by someone who knew how to use them. Performing these landmarks in the19th-century literature for solo piano is the British pianist Jonathan Plowright, hailed in Gramophone as ‘one of the finest living pianists’, and here making his début on BIS.

Natomiast Huffington Post napisał,: ”mimo pięknego dźwięku, bogatej skali dynamicznej i wirtuozerii pozbawionej jakiegokolwiek wysiłku – Angelich nigdy nie pozwala nam zapomnieć prawdziwym przesłaniu muzyki, w którą wciala całą swoją duszę”.Recital Angelicha łączy kontrastujące ze sobą punkty zwrótne romantycznego repertuaru fortepianowego, podkreśla wzajemny szacunek między trzema wielkimi pianistami-kompozytorami: Schumann zadedykował Kreislerianę Chopinowi; Chopin z kolei zadedykował swoje dwie Etiudy Op.10 Lisztowi, a i Liszt dedykował Sonatę Fortepianową H-moll Schumannowi.Ci trzej kompozytorzy prowadzili bardzo odmienne życie, jednak znali się osobiście. Liszt po raz pierwszy spotkał Chopina w Paryżu w 1831 r. i chwalił go wówczas za otwarcie ”nowego etapu w odczuwaniu poetyckich emocji, połączonego tak szczęśliwie z innowacyjną formą jego sztuki”. W tym samym roku Schumann, pisząc w Allgemeine Musikalische Zeitung, przywitał dzieła Chopina słowami: ”Czapki z głów, panowie! Geniusz!”. Chopin i Schumann po raz pierwszy spotkali się w 1835 r. w Lipsku i ponownie w roku następnym. W 1840 r. Schumann udał się do Lipska aby wreszcie spotkać Liszta – przed tym spotkaniem przez wiele lat korespondowali ze sobą, wymieniając partytury i chwaląc nawzajem swoje prace. Gdy Schumann usłyszał wykonanie Liszta napisał: ”Jak nadzwyczajnie gra, śmiało i dziko, a potem znowu czule i eteryczne”.Nicholas Angelich, choć urodzony w Ameryce, kształcony był w systemie edukacji francuskiej. Szczególnie podziwiany jest za interpretacje XIX-wiecznego repertuaru, w którym Liszt, Schumann i Chopin zajmują wyjątkowe miejsce, w sercu artysty. W 2011 r. w setną rocznicę urodzin Liszta, Angelich dał znakomite koncerty, wykonując między innymi potężne Annees de pèlerinage. Wyraził też kilka ciekawych opinii na temat muzyki Schumanna i Chopina w wywiadzie dla francuskiej strony internetowej Jejouedupiano: "Schumann wiedział jak wydobyć dźwięk fortepianu w ten szczególny sposób, którego sobie właśnie życzył. Według mnie niesłuszne jest stwierdzenie o rzekomej ”niezdarności” Schumana w pisaniu i stawianie go wobec naturalnej łatwości pisania, którą ludzie przypisują Chopinowi, Księciu Pianistów. Chopin miał szczególny związek ze swoim instrumentem, który rozumiał jak nikt przed nim".
