The Chanson L'Homme armé has been the fundament for numerous Renaissance composers to realise aesthetic mass compositions. One of the most outstanding versions is coined by Josquin Desprez which is conclusively combined with chansons on this recording. The production received several awards in France.

Chandos is proud to present the complete series of Beethoven String Quartets performed by the legendary Borodin String Quartet. The quartets which contain some the greatest, most enigmatic music ever written, are in the capable hands of one of the world’s finest ensembles. The Borodin String Quartet was formed in 1945 in Moscow. Cellist Valentin Berlinsky was with the quartet since its earliest days and violinist Andrei Abramenkov joined in 1974. Igor Naidin learnt the art of quartet playing from several of the Borodins including the Quartet’s violinist, Dmitri Shebalin, whom he eventually replaced. Leader Ruben Aharonian won prizes at several international competitions, including the Enescu, Montréal and Tchaikovsky. These artists provide a unique insight to these works. The individual volumes were highly acclaimed by the critics and this praised series is now released as a complete box set, at a competitive price and in attractive packaging.

Francesco Ezechiele Ermenegildo, Cavaliere Suppé-Demelli, or as he is more commonly known today, Franz von Suppé, was born in Spalato (Split), then part of the Austrian Empire, to parents of Italian / Belgian and Austrian descent. Although discouraged from a musical career from an early age, Suppé received encouragement from a distant yet illustrious relative, the great Italian opera composer Donizetti. By the 1840s Suppé had carved for himself a successful niche as a composer for the stage, and over the four decades that followed there was rarely a year without a new stage work from him.Although the bulk of his operas and operettas have sunk into relative obscurity, his bright and colourful overtures have survived. Suppé was often referred to as ‘the Viennese Offenbach’, and in fact he was responsible for introducing many of Offenbach’s operettas to the Austrian capital. The Beautiful Galatea was among his first efforts in the style of Offenbach, Suppé here taking on the French composer’s La Belle Hélène.Also on this disc are the overtures to Poet and Peasant, perhaps Suppé’s most familiar, and Boccaccio which is widely regarded as Suppé’s finest work for the stage, based very loosely on the life of Giovanni Boccaccio (1313 – 1375), the Florentine author of the Decameron. It would seem that wars and musical comedy often go hand in hand, perhaps partly for the purpose of deflating military pomposity. Several of Suppé’s operettas are in this vein, including Light Cavalry, The Jolly Robbers, Isabella, and, a major success, Fatinitza, all of which feature military plots in some form.Last, but not least, this disc features Suppé’s overtures to A Morning, Noon, and Night in Vienna, The Queen of Spades, Donna Juanita, and The Model, several operatic marches, the concert march Up Hill and Down Dale, and the Humorous Variations on the beloved Student Song ‘Who comes from afar?’.The works are performed by the Royal Scottish National Orchestra under Neeme Järvi, who in 2012 celebrated his thirty-year recording career with Chandos Records.

Harking back to a golden era in recording, when the ensembles of the Eastman School of Music under the baton of the legendary Frederick Fennell made dozens of pioneering recordings for Mercury Living Presence, the Eastman Wind Ensemble celebrates its 60th anniversary with its first recording for AVIE Records. Stravinsky’s music figured early on in the EWE’s history; his Symphonies for Wind Instruments were performed in 1951 on a program conducted by Frederick Fennell that led to the establishment of the Eastman Wind Ensemble. And in 1966, at the age of 83, Stravinsky made his one and only visit to the Eastman School of Music, overseeing performances of several of his works. Under Mark Scatterday, who continues in the prestigious lineage as the fourth conductor in the EWE’s history, the superior student ensemble performs Stravinsky’s Octet, while Eastman Virtuosi, made up of the Eastman School’s renowned faculty members, turn in a devilishly fine rendition of “L’Histoire du Soldat.

1967 proved to be a transitional year, following the death of Wieland Wagner who had run Bayreuth Festival conjointly with his brother Wolfgang since 1951. Wolfgang then ran the festival on his own, until 2008. In his final year on the Green Hill, Rudolf Kempe was completely attuned to the theatre's special acoustics: here is a 'Lohengrin' of supremely subtle sonorities, with several singers making their huge successful house debuts.
