To a unique degree, Ronald Brautigam has managed to combine highly successful careers as a performer on both the fortepiano and the modern piano. With close to fifty released CDs on BIS, his discography testifies to this, including complete cycles on fortepiano of the solo piano music by Mozart and Haydn, but also four recent discs of Beethoven’s piano concertos played on a modern Steinway. The present disc is the first in a projected series of Mozart’s piano concertos, for which Brautigam returns to the fortepiano – a copy of a 1795 instrument by Anton Walter – and is joined by the experienced period band Die Kölner Akademie conducted by Michael Alexander Willens. The programme includes one of Mozart’s earliest master-pieces, the ‘Jenamy’ Concerto (previously known as ‘Jeunehomme’) composed in 1777 before he had moved from Salzburg to Vienna. This is followed by Piano Concerto No.12 in A major, K 414, one of the first Vienna concertos, and a Rondo for piano and orchestra from the same period. Ronald Brautigam’s ongoing series of Beethoven’s music for piano solo has been met with great acclaim, but his earlier traversal of Mozart’s sonatas and variation were equally well-received, as witness the following quote from a review in Gramophone upon the release of it as a boxed set: ‘Brautigam's imaginative interpretations capture Mozart's many moods, from the galant style of the six earliest sonatas to the aching drama of the A minor (K310).

Jeśli myślimy o wielkich postaciach reggae zaraz obok Boba Marleya musi pojawić się ten artysta, Peter Tosh (naprawdę Winston Hubert McIntosh). Jamajski artysta był u szczytu kariery, którą przerwała tragiczna śmierć w 1987 roku z ręki mordercy. Tosh miał wtedy 42 lata i siedem płyt studyjnych na koncie. Pięć z nich w wersjach zremasterowanych, w kartonikach, będących replikami oryginalnych okładek, znalazło się w prezentowanym boxie z serii "Original Album Series". Wśród nich wydany w roku śmierci Petera, nagrodzony Grammy "No Nuclear War", a także "Wanted Dread Or Alive", na którym Tosha wspomagają jego stali współpracownicy i przyjaciele Sly And Robbie, albo "Bush Doctor", na której słychać Micka Jaggera i Keitha Richardsa z The Rolling Stones.

Following the success of the first volume in their Palestrina series which won the International Classical Music Award for Early Music, Harry Christophers and The Sixteen release the second recording in the series which has a Christmas theme.Palestrina was born in 1525 not far from Rome, in the town whose name he bore and from which we take the cover images for this series of discs.Possibly the greatest composer of liturgical music of all time, Palestrina was a towering figure in Renaissance polyphony. Choral singers world-wide will know his Missa Papae Marcelli (recorded by The Sixteen on COR16014) as, without doubt, it is the most renowned of Palestrina’s works and possibly the most famous mass of all time. Each volume in this series is based around a single mass and theme relevant to that mass, in this case the Nativity and the festive Motet and Mass Hodie Christus Natus Est. The mass features alongside some of his settings of the Song of Songs as well as the Magnificat Quinti toni and Motet O magnum mysterium.

The Chandos series of Weinberg orchestral works is proving a benchmark series, and contributed significantly to his reappraisal. The most recent album by the Gothenberg forces (CHSA5064) was described as’ one of the most exciting discs to come my way in a long time… A release of the first importance, then,’ (International Record Review)Weinberg’s music is full of orchestral colour and rhythmic energy. Shostakovich was his most important influence, and a close friend, describing him as ‘one of the most outstanding composers of the present day’. His music is reminiscent of Shostakovich’s, but with strong elements of Jewish folk music and klezmer.Weinberg composed his First Symphony, a full-scale, four-movement work in G minor in 1942, in Tashkent, the capital of Uzbekistan. He had been driven from Warsaw by the Nazi invasion in 1939 and found refuge in Minsk. Then when the Nazis invaded the Soviet Union, he had to flee again, this time by train via Moscow to Tashkent, where large where large numbers of the Russian artistic intelligentsia joined him in evacuation. Those he met there included the woman who was to become Weinberg’s first wife, Nataliya Vovsi-Mikhoels, daughter of one the most famous Russian-Jewish actors, Solomon Mikhoels. Throughout his life Weinberg understandably considered the Soviet Union his salvation, and it should come as no surprise that his First Symphony is dedicated to the Red Army, at the time of composition locked in deadly combat with the aggressors who were ravaging both his homeland and his adoptive country.Symphony No.1 is coupled with the later Seventh Symphony, composed in 1964 for harpsichord and strings. By 1964 Weinberg had truly settled in the Soviet Union, and his work is much more settled as a result. The work conveys certain piquancy for its use of harpsichord work and was premiered by and dedicated to Rudolf Barshai. In this the fifth album of the series Thord Svedlund, a passionate devotee of Weinberg, conducts the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra.

This is the fourth disc in our series dedicated to the orchestral works of Mieczysław Weinberg, performed by the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra under Thord Svedlund. The cello soloist is Claes Gunnarsson, one of Sweden’s leading cellists, who combines the post as Principal Cello of the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra with a brilliant solo career. After the Second World War, along with many other composers, Weinberg was subjected to a series of campaigns against so-called Formalism in the Soviet arts. As a result he turned his attention to concertante works, a medium less prone to censure than symphonies, sonatas, and quartets. The first movement of the Cello Concerto shares the tense, pensive lyricism found in the opening Nocturne of Shostakovich’s almost exactly contemporaneous First Violin Concerto. This later gives way to the rhythms of a habanera and some impassioned passages of Jewish klezmer, almost as if to guarantee a healthy quota of folk-rooted intonations (a required antidote to charges of Formalism), while at the same time allowing for deeper emotions too.In the 1970s, Weinberg’s symphonic production went in two distinct but complementary directions. One of these was at the patriotic end of the Socialist Realist spectrum, while the other was much more abstract. Weinberg’s highly austere five-movement Symphony No. 20 clearly falls into the latter category – challenging, perplexing, and unpredictable. In the second scherzo Weinberg quotes from his opera The Portrait, based on a short story by Gogol. In fact, the finale perfectly captures the mood of the opera’s closing scenes, in which the artist protagonist realises that he has betrayed his calling, and sinks into delirium and eventual death.A previous volume in our Weinberg series (CHSA 5089: Symphony No. 3 and Suite No. 4 from The Golden Key) was nominated for a Grammy this year, in the Best Engineered Album category.
