Matthias Bamert’s ‘Contemporaries of Mozart’ project is one of Chandos’ longest-running and most successful series. The unquestionable genius of Mozart has tended to eclipse the accomplishments of many other composers who were writing at the same time as he. Many of these composers, successful in their day, suffered neglect in subsequent decades and in some cases were almost forgotten. Matthias Bamert’s series has shown just how rich this area of the repertoire is, and each of the CDs has received superb critical acclaim. This uniquely compiled box set comprises five of the most successful CDs in the series to date (many of the works are poorly represented in the catalogue, if at all) and provides an ideal introduction to the repertoire – at bargain price. Each CD offers a wealth of classically elegant melodies wrapped up in imaginative orchestration.

Continuing her inspiring series of discs exploring the solo piano repertory of the Polish Romantic, Xaver Scharwenka, Seta Tanyel here turns her attention to two of his four piano concertos. These unashamedly appealing works should by no means be judged by their relative unfamiliarty; they are among the most impressive of all the neglected concertos championed in our series, as Stephen Hough’s Gramophone Award winning recording of the 4th concerto (CDA66790) has shown. In the capable hands of Tanyel, the 2nd and 3rd concertos are rich with the harmonic poise of Schumann, the melodic coquettishness of Chopin and even the passion of Rachmaninov; a disc as enlightening as it is thrilling. Although previously issued on Collins Classics, this recording was one of the last issued before the demise of the label, and did not therefore benefit from a wide circulation. We are delighted to reissue it in our Romantic Piano Concerto series where it will surely gain the recognition it deserves.

We have now reached Volume 5 in Jean-Efflam Bavouzet’s project to record the complete piano sonatas of Haydn. Many leading pianists have tackled these, at times technically challenging classical sonatas, but in Bavouzet’s own words, this is a composer who always left the door open for new interpretations: ‘One often forgets how little information Haydn left in the text of his keyboard works: few instructions on nuance and phrasing, and very minimal tempo indications. Playing them is all the more fascinating for that, but it is also arduous and even risky for the performer, who must, even more than usual, create his or her own world and internal logic, only hoping – in the absence of tangible proof – that he or she is not straying too far from the composer’s intentions, forever out of reach.’This series has been going from strength to strength, every volume receiving consistently excellent reviews. Below are a few examples of the many kind words written about Bavouzet’s ongoing Haydn project.Volume 1: ‘Every second of this CD is a delight with Bavouzet’s artistry carrying anything that might sound routine’ International PianoVolume 2: ‘Who is the best composer for refreshing the spirit and making you laugh? Haydn, of course, especially when in the hands of a pianist like Bavouzet, another master of delight’ The TimesVolume 3: ‘A recording worth rushing to the shops for. Bavouzet plays these inventive masterpieces with real love’ Classic FMVolume 4: ‘This series is turning into a real classic: Jean-Efflam Bavouzet has an infectious sense of the witty fun that underlies so many of Haydn’s inventions’ The Observer Also available: Haydn Piano Sonatas Series with Jean-Efflam Bavouzet

In March 1783, the readers of Cramer’s Magazin der Musik could read about a certain ‘Louis van Betthoven’, a ‘boy … of most promising talent’, whose first published work was being advertised as 'nine variations for the pianoforte, written by him on a march, engraved at Mannheim.’ The piece in question was the Dressler Variations, WoO 63, and it marked not only the beginning of an illustrious career, but also the start of Ludwig van Beethoven's lifelong involvement with variation form, culminating almost forty years later in the monumental Diabelli Variations for solo piano, and – in another field – the third movement of his Ninth symphony. In comparison, WoO 63 and the other works included here are certainly less heavy-weight, even if the so-called Venni Amore Variations, WoO 65, has a duration of more than 20 minutes, and in spite of its early date (1790/91) points forward to a much later period in Beethoven's œuvre. The final set of variations on the disc, the Six variations on Nel cor più non mi sento, WoO 70 were composed in 1795, around the same time as the three piano sonatas Op.2. In this series, Ronald Brautigam has previously recorded early sonatas and sonatinas from the same period as the present works, a disc described by the reviewer on German web site Klassik Heute as ‘providing a touching illustration of those times when the great Beethoven was simply young Ludwig’ through playing which is ‘simultaneously committed to the utmost purity of style and imbued with an immense musical exuberance’. As on the previous instalment in the series, Brautigam has chosen to perform these early variations on a fortepiano after a Walter & Sohn instrument from c.1805.

CAM Jazz Presents: The series which introduces prime young talent. CAM Jazz Presents is a new series that CAM Jazz has dedicated to new talent in both the Italian and international jazz scenes, offering an opportunity for deserving artists to venture into the recording world. "The event you are about to hear is totally imaginary. The modus operandi is well known, public events are borrowed from history books, and yet, it is the interpretation offered that renders the truths of totally imagined reconstructions related to the past. This is the strength, the burning power, of this young quartet. The four components, who are well aware of all that history has placed at their disposal, have appropriated the past with a feeling all their own." (F.Scoppio)

The multi-award-winning pianist Jean-Efflam Bavouzet continues his great survey of Haydn’s piano sonatas. This is Volume 3 in a series, of which The Times wrote: ‘Who is the best composer for refreshing the spirit and making you laugh? Haydn, of course, especially when in the hands of a pianist like Bavouzet, another master of delight.’ In the words of Bavouzet himself: ‘Each volume of this ambitious, extended project will arrive over the years like a postcard, dispatched during my travels with scant respect for chronological considerations, but undertaken with the greatest passion for trying to convey as vividly as possible to twenty-first-century ears the boundless treasures of this sublime music.’ He also notes: ‘We often forget how little information Haydn left us in the scores of his keyboard works: few indications of dynamics or of phrasing, and the briefest guides to tempo. This task is never anything other than absolutely fascinating, but for the performer it is also testing, and even risky. He must, even more than usual, create his own world, his own logic, left only to hope that, in the absence of tangible evidence, he will not distance himself too far from the composer’s intentions, which remain forever unknowable.’ For the recording of this series, Bavouzet brought in a specially selected Yamaha piano which he feels gives the sort of tonal quality he is looking for, and once again this shows in a programme, which here presents the large-scale Sonata in C minor alongside sonatas of a lighter and sunnier character.
