Artyści bawią się dźwiękami, nieustannie poszukując nowych, niespodziewanych rozwiązań, co słychać chociażby w dwóch otwierających krążek utworach – zarazem humorystycznych i mrocznych “The Werewolf” oraz “Wristband”.Jak ujmuje to sam Paul Simon: „Chodziło nam o to, żeby stworzyć coś dobrze znanego w zupełnie nowy sposób, nagrać muzykę, która zabrzmi zarazem staromodnie i nowocześnie. Muzykę, która ma w sobie jakąś tajemnicę”. Pierwsza piosenka, która powstała na potrzeby albumu, „Insomniac’s Lullaby,” poprowadziła Simona ku rozwiązaniom zaproponowanym przez Harry’ego Partcha – amerykańskiego kompozytora i teoretyka muzyki, którego pasją było tworzenie instrumentów o nietypowych, mikrotonowych strojach. Aby uchwycić unikalne brzmienie tych instrumentów, Simon zabrał swój sprzęt do Montclair State University w New Jersey, gdzie przechowywana jest ich oryginalna kolekcja.„Stranger to Stranger” zaskakuje unikalną, złożoną rytmiką. Pomysł na jej uchwycenie narodził się wskutek eksperymentalnej sesji z perkusjonalistą z zespołu Simona oraz grupą muzyków flamenco. Temu eksperymentowi swoje groovy zawdzięczają cztery utwory, które znalazły się na albumie – „The Riverbank”, „The Werewolf”, „Wristband” oraz „Stranger to Stranger”.Swój duży wpływ na brzmienie albumu miał też włoski wykonawca elektronicznej muzyki tanecznej – Clap! Clap!, którego album „Tayi Bebba”, łączący rdzenną afrykańską muzykę i EDM, bardzo przypadł Simonowi do gustu. Clap! Clap! zarejestrował swoje dźwięki w trzech utworach: „The Werewolf”, „Wristband” oraz „Street Angel”.Raz jeszcze oddajmy głos Simonowi: „Brzmienie jest tematem przewodnim tego albumu, ale także każdej piosenki, która się na nim znajduje. Będę szczęśliwy, jeśli ludzie dobrze odczytają moje intencje. Dobra piosenka wydana w odpowiednich dla siebie czasach może stanowić inspirację nawet dla kilku pokoleń fanów. Peter Gabriel to jeden z najważniejszych współczesnych artystów i każda jego płyta staje się wydarzeniem. Tak było też w 2010 roku, gdy po 8-letniej przerwie Gabriel wydał album Scratch My Back, na którym wraz z towarzyszeniem orkiestry wykonał rovery 12 utworów z repertuaru innych artystów, których bardzo ceni (jak m.in. To była jednak zaledwie pierwsza część projektu, bowiem Peter wpadł na pomysł swoistej wymiany utworów między artystami. Wykonawcy, których piosenki wykonał, zgodzili się nagrać własne wersje utworów Petera Gabriela. Album And I’ll Scratch Yours, który ukaże się pod koniec września, będzie zawierać takie właśnie covery. Płytę firmuje Peter Gabriel, ale jego największe hity wykonują inni, m.in. David Byrne, Lou Reed, Paul Simon, Regina Spektor, Randy Newman, Brian Eno czy Elbow.
