Choć Lost In The Dream jest trzecim albumem pochodzącej z Filadelfii formacji The War On Drugs, to jednak pod wieloma względami sprawia wrażenie pierwszego. W okolicach wydania przełomowego albumu Slave Ambient z 2011 roku, Adam Granduciel ruszył w dwuletnią trasę koncertową, występując w rockowych klubach, na festiwalach i w programach telewizyjnych. W tym czasie The War On Drugs stał się prawdziwie rock’n’rollowym zespołem. Ten fakt dodał energii dziesięciu piosenkom, które Granduciel wyprodukował razem z wieloletnim współpracownikiem, realizatorem Jeffem Zeiglerem. W przeszłości podstawę nowych utworów Granduciel przygotowywał sam. Tym razem piosenki były wykonywane i nagrywane przez cały zespół. W jego składzie znaleźli się: Dave Hartley, czyli ulubiony basista Adama, z którym współpracuje od czasu debiutanckiej płyty Wagonwheel Blues z 2008 roku oraz pianista Robbie Bennett, który jako multiinstrumentalista miał także wkład w Slave Ambient.
