Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart could have been proud of the unusual instrumentation of Quintet KV 452, for there had been to date no examples of this combination of piano and wind. At the same time combining piano and wind was by no means an easy compositional task, because of the problems with regard to the relative loudness of the instruments involved. This must also be the reason why this instrumentation was seldom re-used except in works which directly call to mind Mozart’s, such as, for example, the quintets of Beethoven and Danzi. There appears in the Quintet a unique blend of different genres and musical styles that expresses the underlying harmoniemusik through the four wind instruments, is reminiscent of a piano concerto and a Sinfonia concertante with the concertante treatment of the instruments involved. Ludwig van Beethoven took Mozart’s work as a direct model for his Quintett op. 16. This is not only the adoption of the same key and sequence of movements obviously, but extends to structural elements and further details. Yet even more than Mozart’s work, Beethoven’s Quintet is a kind of “chamber concerto”, with the piano and wind  instruments in opposition. Both quintets belong inseparably together because no further works with this instrumentation and at such an outstanding level have been written

Piotr Becza a has enjoyed success at all the great opera houses of the world. He also excels in the Slavic repertoire, which may be less than familiar to the box office but worthy of recognition, especially with such a voice possessed by this Polish tenor. Notable successes have been Becza a s sell-out performances as the Prince in Dvo ák s Rusalka at the Salzburg Festival and as Lenski in Tchaikovsky s Eugene Onegin at the Met, Covent Garden and elsewhere. Becza a s recital here includes highlights from the aforementioned works, but he also offers proof of the rich possibilities that this repertoire offers for a tenor to display both vocal grace and melancholy. It was in Warsaw that many of the operas were premièred, such as The Haunted Manor, The Raftsman and Halka by Stanis aw Moniuszko. He was one of the driving forces behind the patriotic opera aesthetic of the newly founded national states in 19th century Europe, an aesthetic not just restricted to Poland. These three operas offer intense scenes of reminiscence and contemplation for their tenor protagonists, and they are joined here by the later, almost verismo operas Janek and The Baltic legend. Prince Igor is more familiar in the west, so it is fitting that Becza a here reminds us once more of the qualities of Vladimir s romance from it. The musical spectrum is completed by examples of exoticism and local colour with excerpts from Sadko (in two different orchestrations), May Night, Aleko and Arensky s Raphael. This is a solo programme from one of the great tenors of our time, as varied as it is rich in discoveries.

To coincide with the tenth anniversary of the UK Choral Pilgrimage, Harry Christophers and The Sixteen return to the repertoire of Tudor England that made their first tour such a success. Sixteenth-century England was a place of much religious change. It was a dangerous and confusing time as Henry VIII, who had split with Rome, was succeeded by his young son Edward VI, then by the ardent Catholic, Mary, and finally by the Protestant, Elizabeth I. Composers of the day, such as William Byrd, John Sheppard and Thomas Tallis, were required to adapt to rapidly changing musical requirements and it is testament to their incredible skill and musical mastery that they produced such magnificent works in such troubled times. At the heart of this programme are Sheppard’s monumental Media vita in morte sumus and Byrd’s deeply personal setting of Infelix ego. Set amongst these exceptional masterpieces are Byrd’s joyful motets Laudibus in sanctis and Haec dies, and one of the gems of this recording – Tallis’ Miserere nostri.

In many of J. S. Bach’s cantatas, passions and oratorios, the oboe – and its various relatives such as the oboe d’amore and oboe da caccia – plays a prominent role. Using it as his preferred obbligato instrument, Bach obviously cherished the versatility of the oboe and selected it to accompany arias that deal with grief and heavenly joys, repentance and pastoral calm. It is therefore odd that no major concertante works for oboe by Bach have survived – or have they? Researchers have for a long time thought that his keyboard concertos were originally composed for other instruments, and much evidence points to certain of them being intended for the oboe, or oboe d’amore. Four such works have been gathered here, together with the Adagio from the composer’s Easter Oratorio, in performances by Alexei Ogrintchouk, one of today’s outstanding oboists. Starting to perform internationally at the age of 13, Ogrintchouk is currently principal oboist of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, combining the position with solo engagements around the world. On his first solo disc for BIS he also directs the Swedish Chamber Orchestra himself, and is joined by dazzling young violinist Alina Ibragimova in the well-loved Double Concerto in C minor.
