“What This Silence, the Baudelaire Songs and the Elegy for viola and seven instruments show is that Turnage is often at his strongest when he surrenders to his lyrical impulses. His melodic lines may be too edgily contemporary for nostalgic tastes - more Miles Davis than Elgar or Puccini - but they have a poignancy and beauty that can't fail to move unprejudiced ears. The Nash Ensemble's fine performances are all very sympathetically recorded...”Gramophone Classical Music Guide2010“Here's yet another disc from the Nash Ensemble devoted to the music of Mark-Anthony Turnage and it is, in a sense, the most representative because it gives a fine indication of his range.Favourites come from opposite tendencies.Slide Stride (2002) is a noisily affirmative piano quintet based on James P Johnson's style of jazz piano and dedicated to Richard Rodney Bennett, whereas True Life Stories, unveiled as a group by Leif Ove Andsnes in 2000, are cool piano miniatures. As is usual with Turnage these days, not all the core material is new and the last in the sequence, the haunting tribute to To¯ru Takemitsu, cheekily reprises the final item on that Black Box anthology. Ian Brown plays it with more restraint and less pedal this time around – or it could be simply that the sound is not as resonant. While Turnage demonstrates a continuing ability to straddle disparate musical worlds, his startling fluency begins to look as much a problem as an asset. In Two Baudelaire Songs (2004) he sets poems already transmogrified by Debussy and Henri Duparc. Only here L'invitation auvoyage is deconstructed rather than indulged, a peculiarly dissonant close undercutting the 'Luxe, calme et volupté' of the text. As miked, the soloist Sally Matthews is very much one of the band. Lawrence Power's viola seems rather forwardly placed in the autumnal Eulogy (2003), an immediately convincing composition that doesn't strive for novelty.Turnage's world has dark, claustrophobic qualities, underlined here by the immediate, focused recording masterminded by Chris Craker. Barry Witherden's copious notes are helpful. Not perhaps a disc you would want to digest at one sitting though this generous selection of definitive performances is well worth sampling.

Three cantatas from 1729 gathered on the 50th volume of Masaaki Suzuki’s traversal of J.S. Bach’s cantatas testifies to a huge loss to music – along with another six works, they are all that remain of what was probably an entire year’s worth of cantatas, composed by Bach in collaboration with the Leipzig poet Picander (Christian Friedrich Henrici). Some fifty cantatas from this year are unaccounted for, but on the evidence of those that are still extant, it is still possible to see the outlines of the lost cantata year. Fairly concise, the cantatas generally make sparing use of the choir. Instead they centre on two arias, linked by one or two recitatives, and a final chorale. In addition, the surviving works contain several examples of parody – movements in which Bach combined Picander’s words with an already existing composition – as well as the reuse of earlier instrumental movements as introductions. A striking example is the opening Sinfonia of BWV 174, where Bach used the first movement of his Third Brandenburg Concerto, adding new parts for three horns and for a tutti section consisting of two violins, viola and three oboes. Another highlight may also be the result of a borrowing – the soprano aria Gottes Engel… from BWV149 is a minuet, complete with the polonaise accents fashionable at the time, and could well have served a secular purpose at another occasion. It is here performed by Hana Blažíková, appearing on this disc alongside three other familiar soloists of the series: Robin Blaze (counter-tenor), Gerd Türk (tenor) and Peter Kooij (bass). With another five discs to go before completing their monumental task, Masaaki Suzuki and his Bach Collegium Japan are in no way flagging, as proven by this splendid instalment, and by recent releases which have received critical acclaim, for instance in International Record Review, where Volume 48 was described as demonstrating ‘the ever-rising standard, by now quite stratospheric, of Suzuki and his choir and orchestra in this massive recording project.’

Recent discs from Marc-Andre Hamelin have concentrated on music which is obscure, under-recorded or virtually unplayable. However in this latest recording he turns his attention to two mainstays of the Romantic repertoire: Chopin’s Piano Sonatas Nos 2 and 3. The results are simply staggering: playing of matchless brilliance and consummate artistry, stunningly recorded. As a recent critic of Hamelin’s live performance of the B minor sonata remarked, ‘Hamelin starts where most other pianists leave off … such was his control that frequently it seemed as though an extra dimension were being added, the music’s teeming internal life clarified by his ability to voice the inner parts’. The disc is completed by some of Chopin’s greatest single-movement works; the contrasting two Nocturnes of Op 27, the extraordinarily colouristic Berceuse Op 57 and the monumental Barcarolle in F sharp major. We think this is one of the most authoritative and important Chopin discs to have appeared in recent years—an unmissable release.Gramophone Editor's Choice ; Sunday Times Classical Cd Of The Week‘Though Hamelin has made many fabulous discs, particularly in repertoire of superhuman virtuosity, this is one of his very finest achievements to date’ (Gramophone).‘Chopin’s second and third piano sonatas lie at the heart of the Romantic piano literature, and Hamelin, a poet among virtuosos, brings sensibility and a brilliant technique in equal measure to this oft-recorded music … This is the Chopin of a true Romantic, spellbinding at its (considerable) best and superbly recorded' (Sunday Times).[Third Sonata] 'Hamelin's impeccable pianism allows him to make light work of the most demanding passages. The first movement is as imposing as you would expect of a player renowned for his staggering virtuosity, but a solid framework also underpins moments of wonderful delicacy. Hamelin builds the Second Sonata just as unerringly, producing a poetic and passionate performance that is finally carried off on a spectral wind … Hyperion's new release adds up to a hugely satisfying Chopin recital" (BBC Music Magazine).‘This is Chopin playing of a superior kind in which a musician of penetrating intellect is able to observe every detail of these miraculous scores … This is a fine example of supreme technical skill at the service of musical poetry’ (Classic FM Magazine).
