Debiutancki album bostońskiego kwintetu Della Mae zatytułowany "This World Oft Can Be" wychodzi dzięki wytwórni Rounder. Wyprodukowany przez Bryana Suttona i zmiksowany przez Paula Q. Kolderie (Radiohead, Hole, Dinosaur Jr.) album udowadnia, że podobnie jak Avett Brothers, Lumineers czy Punch Brothers, pięć utalentowanych kobiet z Della Mae podchodzi do amerykańskiej tradycji w sposób twórczy, sięgając do muzyki poprzednich stuleci przy jednoczesnej świadomości dzisiejszej wrażliwości. Na płytę składa się dwanaście utworów, pośród nich "Empire', "Paper Prince", "Maybeline" i tytułowa ścieżka – pokaz pięciu różnych instrumentalnych światów, śpiewnych harmonii i subtelnie brzmiących na ich tle partii wokalnych. Pomimo że każda artystka z osobna zdobyła do tej pory wiele nagród i wyróżnień za twórczość solową, album pokazuje brzmienie grupy jako zespołu – kolektywne myślenie o efekcie końcowym zdecydowało o homogenicznym wyrazie wszystkich utworów. „Tożsamość, którą stworzyłyśmy jako zespół, jest wynikiem naszych jednostkowych osobowości” – zauważa twórczyni zespołu, Kimber Ludiker. Wybrany przez ambasadorów i attache kulturalnych zespół wyjechał na trwającą 43 dni trasę koncertową po krajach Azji Centralnej – Pakistanie, Kazachstanie, Kirgistanie, Tadżykistanie, Turkmenistanie i Uzbekistanie, gdzie miał szansę nawiązać współpracę z tamtejszymi muzykami, wziąć udział w edukacyjnych programach dla dzieci, a także zagrać na koncertach zorganizowanych dla lokalnej publiczności. „To było życiowe doświadczenie, zarówno dla całego zespołu, jak i dla każdej z nas z osobna” – powiedziała po zakończeniu trasy Ludiker. „Wielką zaletą tamtej tradycji muzycznej jest brak wyraźnych granic stawianych między gatunkami muzycznymi. Dobitnie doświadczyłyśmy tam, że jeśli muzyka grana jest z zaangażowaniem, publiczność zawsze reaguje pozytywnie. In spite of the fact that more than 15 years have passed since Masaaki Suzuki and his Bach Collegium Japan began recording all of Bach’s church cantatas, the team’s commitment seems if anything to be increasing as this huge project enters its final stretch. The same evidently applies to the enthusiasm of the reviewers, who have been praising the latest instalments even more fulsomely than usual, with Diapason awarding top marks to Volume 44, Volume 46 being made a ‘Critics’ Choice’ in Gramophone, and BBC Music Magazine singling out both Volume 47 and 48 as ‘Choral & Song Choice of the Month’. In the present volume Masaaki Suzuki has gathered four works from 1728-29, with the common denominator that the texts for them were all written by the poet Christian Friedrich Henrici. Using the pseudonym Picander, Henrici collaborated with Bach on numerous occasions, most famously so in the St Matthew Passion and the Christmas Oratorio. The present cantata texts were included by the poet in a volume which contains similar texts spanning the entire church year, and it seems possible that Bach set the full cycle to music. As there are only nine extant 'Picander cantatas', this would mean that some fifty Bach cantatas have been lost without trace – a significant loss to music. The four works gathered here hint at the variety that may have characterized the Bach-Picander cantata year, with moods spanning from the jubilation of the New Year Cantata BWV171 to the anticipation of Jesus’ path of suffering in Sehet, wir gehn hinauf gen Jerusalem, BWV159, intended for the Sunday before Passiontide. There is also variety on a more technical level, with BWV188 and BWV156 both beginning with instrumental sinfonias featuring important solo parts for organ and oboe respectively.

Ravel composed his highly imaginative piano suite Miroirs in 1904-05 after he had joined the Société des Apaches, a group of ground-breaking young musicians, composers, music critics, poets, writers and painters, among them great names like Igor Stravinsky, Florent Schmitt, Manuel de Falla and Maurice Delage. It was Ravel who proposed to adopt the main theme of the first movement of Borodin’s Second Symphony as the society’s musical dictum, a suggestion all members gladly accepted. Miroirs is a musical tribute to his fellow ‘Apaches’ or ‘hooligans’: each of the five movements is dedicated to one of the members. The eight short pieces that comprise Schumann’s Kreisleriana not only prove the point of highest musical imagination, but each individual movement is also a prime example of formal discipline and structural coherence within the cycle as a whole. It is no coincidence that Schumann studied Bach’s Well-Tempered Clavier intensively when working on the Kreisleriana. The work’s tonal scheme shares one simple, unifying harmonic factor: the related keys of the ‘daemonic’ G minor and the rather gentle B flat major underpin six of the eight movements. Alexander Scriabin’s earliest compositions, most of them for solo piano, clearly demonstrate his adoration of Chopin, where his first two symphonies are still strongly liaised with Tchaikovsky’s. And like both these composers also Scriabin excelled in creating rich and colourful textures and sonorities. But it was Scriabin’s Later fascination for Wagner, Liszt and Nietzsche, Together with that mystic domain of theosophy and poetic symbolism that gradually put up a quite powerful momentum in his creative life. It all culminated in his greatest of all visions, that he would be able to establish an all-embracing, eternal and super human art form. Alexei Volodin is a master in creating the right atmosphere for these imaginative works of all three composers. Although he is a virtuoso, he is even more a pianist who can dive deep into the inner world of the composer and his work. Combined with his own inner depth this results in performances that leave a lasting impression on the listener.

This 58th volume of the Romantic Piano Concerto series presents two composer-pianists who contributed to Liszt’s piano extravaganza Hexaméron (1837).Thalberg (who would be celebrating his 200th birthday in 2012) famously took part in a pianistic ‘duel’ with Liszt, and was popularly acclaimed as the greatest pianist in the world during his lifetime. He only wrote one piano concerto, and that in his teens, but it is a brilliantly effective showpiece for virtuosity and stamina, the pianist’s hands barely leaving the piano. Johann Peter Pixis has now been consigned—perhaps unfairly—to the oblivion where so many early 19thcentury composers dwell. These are world premiere recordings of his charming Piano Concerto and Piano Concertino.Howard Shelley, undisputed master of the music of the early Romantic period, directs the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra from the keyboard with his usual insouciance and poise.

  On 17 July 2011 over 800 peformers gathered in London’s Royal Albert Hall to give a rare performance of Havergal Brian’s Symphony No 1 in D minor—‘The Gothic’. Tickets for this Prom sold out within 24 hours, and so it gives us great pleasure to make this live recording available to all.  It’s a pretty phenomenal work. Responding to the challenge set by Sir Henry Wood, the composer has thrown just about every known orchestral instrument into the mix, then adding a double chorus of over 500, plus children’s choirs, for an hour-long Te Deum—the church’s blazing Hymn of Thanksgiving—which makes up the symphony’s finale.  Whether or not you were lucky enough to be there on the night, this is a recording not to be missed.
