The Bach Collegium Japan was founded by Masaaki Suzuki 20 years ago, in 1990, and the team’s cycle of Bach’s Cantatas was launched five years later, in November 1995. Now, 46 volumes and fifteen years later, the series has entered the final stretch but is still going as strong as ever. Reviews of recent volumes speak for themselves – ‘With Suzuki you can hear Bach's heart beat...’ the reviewer in International Record Review wrote in regards to Volume 40, while Volume 43 caused the critic in Fanfare to rhapsodize: ‘a set for the ages, not only performed with consummate style, historical considerations, and musical substance, but with a feeling for these seminal religious works that transcends the merely mechanical presentation that we so often - too often - hear.’ There is certainly nothing mechanical about the present performances, of three works which in emotional content range from the joyful vitality of the Advent cantata BWV36 to the meditations upon death and the leave-taking of this world which permeate BWV27. As always the opening choruses are of particular interest, for instance that of Cantata BWV47, a striking example of Bach’s skills in illustrating a text in music but also a highly complex composition in which the interplay between choir and orchestra is beautifully balanced. The soloists also have their share of fine moments on this instalment. Hana Blažíková, dubbed ‘an ideal Bach soprano’ in International Record Review on account of her performance on the previous Cantata volume, performs the charming and playful aria ‘Auch mit gedämpften, schwachen Stimmen’ with solo violin, while Robin Blaze and Peter Kooij – both veterans of this series – each have received a true display piece in the form of the two arias of BWV27.

In this latest volume from The Cardinall’s Musick acclaimed Byrd series, the composer’s overtly Catholic agenda is clearly displayed. In an age when censorship was rife and spies were everywhere, it is not surprising that possession of the first volume of Gradualia should have been cited as one of the reasons for the arrest of a Jesuit priest called de Noiriche (although obviously the spies had other more compelling evidence to hand). Only one set of the 1605 partbooks remains intact, although they have had their introductory material removed and perhaps these volumes were considered too dangerous to own. This fear, whether real or perceived, was not enough to dissuade Byrd and his publisher from producing a second book of Gradualia in 1607, or from re-printing both volumes in 1610. All of the music on this disc is drawn from the first volume of Gradualia published in 1605. The music is a world away from the dark broodings of the Cantiones Sacrae from 1589 and 1591 where Byrd is preoccupied with the melancholy which dominates his middle years. In the later publications Byrd achieves a fusion of styles, mixing the energy, wordpainting and rhythmic vitality of the secular madrigal tradition with the spirituality and liturgical context of words from the Mass and Divine Office. The witty use of short bursts of melody often thrown from one voice to another, together with the energized rhythmic cells, suggests a man who is not obsessed with a hopeless cause. It may be that in the Essex countryside, surrounded by sympathetic folk, Byrd had found a real home away from the political maelstrom which raged in London. These pieces show a glimpse of the man which is rather different to our more usual perception of the composer racked with misery at the deprivation of Catholics in England. Here we see a man in the later stages of life, affected by the aftermath of the Reformation (as his earlier publications clearly show), yet who is now sufficiently relaxed and secure to be able to indulge his considerable wit and imagination, and who is confident enough to use the most up-to-date musical styles. Here there is no wringing of hands, nor downcast eyes but rather the musical embodiment of an unshakeable faith.

W zamian, muzyk zdecydował się oddać pałeczkę w ręce takich profesjonalistów jak Pharrell Williams, Greg Wells, Jack Splash, John Hill and Oak (of Oak & Pop). Swój najnowszy materiał Hawthorne określa jako “zupełnie różny od wcześniejszych dwóch płyt”, a także jako “podróż w nieznane”. W kwietniu 2018 Niall Horan wraz z zespołem zrobili sobie krótką przerwę w światowym tournee, by pojechać do Dublina i nagrać utwory z debiutanckiego albumu „Flicker” z towarzyszeniem 45-osobowej RTÉ Concert Orchestra. Wydarzenie zarejestrowano na potrzeby wydawnictwa „Flicker Featuring The RTÉ Concert Orchestra”. „ „Flicker” to album, który powstał z głębi serca. A moje serce należy do Irlandii. Możliwość nagrania moich utworów z 45-osobową orkiestrą było dla mnie spełnieniem marzeń. Zrobić to w ojczyźnie, z RTÉ Concert Orchestra, jedną z najlepszych orkiestr w Europie, dodała całemu przedsięwzięciu wyjątkowości” - wyznaje artysta. Na wydawnictwo trafiło 9 utworów, które pierwotnie ukazały się na multi-platynowym albumie „Flicker”, w tym m.in. „This Town”, „Too Much To Ask”, jak również niewydany wcześniej kawałek „So Long”. Niall Horan tłumaczy: „Nagrywając album nigdy nie udało osiągnąć mi się satysfakcjonującej produkcji przy „So Long”. Spędziłem długie godziny na próbach z tym kawałkiem. Pewnego razu spontanicznie dołączył do mnie zespół. I tak powstała nowa wersja, która brzmi świetnie na żywo. Włączyliśmy ją na stałe do naszego repertuaru. Cieszę się, że „So Long” w końcu pojawi się oficjalnie na płycie.” RTÉ Concert Orchestra zagrała z Niallem Horanem pod batutą Gavina Murphy’ego. Niall sprzedał z One Direction ponad 70 mln płyt na całym świecie. Jego debiutancki solowy singiel, „This Town”, ukazał się w 2016 i do dziś sprzedano ponad 6 mln egzemplarzy utworu. Jeszcze lepszy wynik - 8,5 mln - odnotował kolejny utwór artysty, „Slow Hands”. W październiku 2017 ukazał się debiutancki album solowy Nialla, „Flicker”. Płyta zadebiutowała na 1. miejscu w Irlandii i USA, jak również na szczycie iTunes w 61 krajach.
