This is the 6th instalment of PentaTone’s successful Wagner Edition. It is the first time in the recording history that a label records all major Wagner opera’s with the same orchestra, choir and conductor. This makes the PentaTone Wagner Edition a great collector’s item. After this release follows Der Ring des Nibelungen. The 4 opera’s of the “The Ring” will all be released in the course of 2013, The WAGNER YEAR (celebrating the 200th anniversary of his birth in 1813)
Neeme Järvi brings us Vol. 3 in his survey of orchestral works by the Norwegian composer Johan Svendsen. This series has received great reviews for its idiomatic performances by the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra and the violinist Marianne Thorsen. Gramophone wrote of Vol. 2: ‘Järvi and his Norwegian forces are on scintillating form… to be treasured.’ Also on this disc are Two Icelandic Melodies, on tunes that were likely taken down by Svendsen on a journey to Iceland and the Faroe Islands in the summer of 1867, and the Violin Concerto (1870), which Svendsen himself saw as being new and original, several critics at the time agreeing with him. In this piece, the composer’s focus is on the contrast in timbre between soloist and orchestra, rather than the soloist’s virtuosic battle against it. His model for the work may well have been Berlioz’s Harold en Italie for orchestra and viola.

The BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Martyn Brabbins give invigorating and authoritative performances of William Walton’s masterful symphonies. The musicians balance stunning control with breathtaking energy and character.Following the resounding success of Belshazzar’s Feast, Walton spent three years perfecting his dramatic first symphony. The immensely virtuosic work displays an astounding range of colours and emotional volatility, reflecting the turbulence of Walton’s private life. Despite its fraught gestation – the first performance in 1934 by the London Symphony Orchestra was missing the finale – this work met with an ecstatic critical reception and has remained popular ever since.The second symphony, premiered by the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra in 1960, is more concise and refined. Somewhat out of kilter with the austerity of its time, this masterpiece was slow to emerge from the shadow of its predecessor. Also included is the intimate orchestral work Siesta, from 1926.
