The association of Denis Gaultier with Apollo in a 17th c. lute manuscript is not as audacious as it might at first appear: the lutenist was held in great esteem by his contemporaries; indeed, for many he was the embodiment of genius on the lute, the “nonpareil”, and one of the very few capable of “speaking” to his listeners. At first glance, his compositions seem little different from those of his collegues, but further examination reveals a sophistication unparalleled in any other lute music of the period. One is immediately struck by the economy of the writing, in which no note is superfluous and the musical structure reduced to its essence. This minimalist approach is even more apparent in later, published versions which show subtle traces of revision. Denis Gaultier exploited the instrument to the full, and in doing so take the art of lute-playing to a realm undreamt of by elder colleagues. His music placed great demands on the lutenist, lute and listener alike for, knowing what could be achieved, Gaultier chose to push the instrument to its limits, and everyone else along with it.

Following five critically-acclaimed and immensely popular recordings for AVIE, The Brook Street Band embark on their most ambitious project to date: a collaboration with the estimable student Choir of The Queen’s College, Oxford, that pairs for the first time ever the two settings of the Dixit Dominus written by Alessandro Scarlatti and George Frideric Handel. Both works date from early 18th century Rome, Handel’s within a year of his arriving in the musical capital, and possibly influenced by Scarlatti’s work, though the date of the elder Italian’s composition is not precisely known. Indeed it has been suggested that the 22-year-old Lutheran was attempting to outdo Scarlatti with his masterly grasp of large-scale sacred music for the Roman rite. In between these two grand Vespers, The Brook Street Band serve up a palette cleanser of an instrumental concerto in G minor by Scarlatti. On this recording the massed forces are joined by five of Britain’s brightest young singers: soprano Elin Manahan Thomas, mezzo-sopranos Esther Brazil and Sally Bruce-Payne, tenor Guy Cutting, and bass-baritone Matthew Brook. critical acclaim for The Choir of The Queen’s College, Oxford “the choir produced an exquisitely pure sound … [Owen Rees] an impressive conductor.”– Early Music Review critical acclaim for The Brook Street Band “performances of remarkable freshness and vitality … Superb.” – Gramophone, Editor’s Choice (for J. S. Bach Trio Sonatas, AV 2199) summary The Brook Street Band join forces with the Choir of The Queen’s College, Oxford, and their director Owen Rees, for the first ever pairing on disc of the two settings of the Dixit Dominus by Alessandro Scarlatti and George Frideric Handel.

To celebrate its 10th anniversary PentaTone has decided to embark on a unique project: Recording the 10 major Wagner operas with the same forces. Never before a record company has recorded all Wagner opera's with the same Orchestra, Choir and conductor. This project became possible since the Rundfunk Sinfonieorchester Berlin had decided to program all the Wagner opera's in three seasons in concert performances. Marek Janowski the Music Director of the Orchestra (who a.o. recorded the first digital Ring cycle in Dresden) felt that in Berlin with its 3 opera houses too much attention went to the mis en scene and wanted to enable the audiences of his orchestra to listen to the music Wagner has composed without being detracted by the way stage directors and set designers influence the Wagner experience and detract from the music. For the full story we refer to the (video) interview with Marek Janowski which was done by the magazine "Gramophone" which will soon be posted on the Gramophone website. A short version of the interview will be published by "Gramophone" in the print version of the awards issue of the magazine (street date: 7 October 2011).Partners in the project are Deutschland Radio and the Rundfunk Chor Berlin. Each opera will only be performed once. Concerts take place in the Philharmonie in Berlin, one of the "homes" of the orchestra (the other one is the Konzerthaus in former East Berlin). The decision to do the concerts in the prestigious Philharmonie, -which was best suited for the mega forces needed for the Wagner operas- immediate triggered a lot of logistical problems since most of the year the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra is giving its performances in this venue. Not just 10 free nights were needed spread over 3 seasons, but also at least three days prior to each concert for rehearsals. Only after all the free "slots" had been found the selection of (top) singers could start.

For their debut recording (made in 1987), the ensemble Sinfonye put together a program focusing on (as the subtitle puts it) "the Medieval Woman: Lover, Poet, Patroness and Saint." Naturally, Sinfonye includes "A chantar m'er," the only lyric by a female troubadour (the Comtessa Beatriz de Dia) to have survived with a melody; they also include two examples of the chanson de femme, a genre that, though written by a man, depicts a female narrator lamenting the loss of her beloved to another. The centerpiece of the disc, however, is the Cantigas de Amigo by the Galician trovador Martin Codax: this six-song cycle depicts a young woman alternately lamenting the absence of her seafaring lover and celebrating his imminent return. Very little is known for certain about how or even whether these songs were accompanied by instruments; Sinfonye uses various combinations of medieval fiddle, hurdy-gurdy, harp, and drum--and even unaccompanied voice. Singer Mara Kiek, whose background is in Balkan folk singing, has a throaty, slightly rustic tone yet sings with a vivid eloquence fully worthy of the material. Matthew Westphal   GRAMOPHONE CRITICS' CHOICE 'Surely one of the most memorable and touching recitals of the decade' (The Independent)'Like so much that has been good, innovative and dangerous in recent recordings of early music, this comes from Hyperion' (BBC Record Review)'A fantastic record. Buy it' (Early Music News)
