Since early mediaeval times, the characteristic church services held in the Catholic Church have incorporated the prayer times of the Officium on Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday, particularly the Matins. These services were originally held in the early hours of the morning but were in later centuries transferred to the afternoon of the previous day. Each of these Matins consisted of three nocturnes in which Psalm recitations alternate with readings from the Lamentations of the prophet Jeremiah and texts by the theological teacher St Augustine and responses. Over the course of time, the settings of these texts became progressively more elaborate in their polyphony. The popularity of these Matins in Catholic Europe, particularly up to the end of the eighteenth century, was however not limited to their frequently rich musical design; the names given to these services such as “Pumpermetten” or “Finstermetten” accompanied by the customs of hammering on the church pews or the gradual extinguishing of the candles are testament to a great folk tradition. August the Strong’s conversion to Catholicism created a demand for ceremonial church services to cele-brate Holy Week at the court chapel in Dresden and Jan Dismas Zelenka was commissioned to compose the appropriate music. Zelenka wrote six Lamentationes Jeremia Prophetae ZWV 53 (of which only the firs lamentation is included on this CD) and the 27 Responsoria pro hebdomada sancta ZWV 55.The Collegium 1704 and Collegium Vocale 1704 under the direction of Vaclav Luks have produced a pair of extensive CDs with the firs complete recording of the nine nocturnes of Holy Week within their liturgical context with all lessons in church modes, the Gregorian antiphons and the entire collection of 27 responses from the Responsoria pro hebdomada sancta ZWV 55, conjuring up a comprehensive impression of the celebrations of Holy Week at the Dresden court chapel during the 1720s.

It was during an extended visit to Mannheim in 1777 that Mozart became friendly with the oboist Friedrich Ramm, a member of the famous Mannheim orchestra which was widely acknowledged as the finest in Europe (‘an army of generals’ as Charles Burney remarked). Earlier the same year Mozart had composed his Oboe Concerto, and impressed by Ramm’s ability, he now played the work through to him on the piano. Although Mozart had written it for another player, Ramm was to make it his own: by 14 February 1778 he had performed it no less than five times – ‘a great sensation…Ramm’s cheval de bataille’ as Mozart described it. Mozart later found occasion to compose especially for Ramm – the Oboe Quartet was written as a celebration of his virtuosity, and significantly challenged the boundaries of the possible on the contemporary oboe. As principal oboist of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, and an international soloist in his own right, Alexei Ogrintchouk may well be said to be the Friedrich Ramm of our day – also on BIS, his performances of J.S. Bach’s oboe concertos was judged to be ‘as astonishing as it is successful’ on the web site klassik-heute.de, with a sound described as ‘generous, rounded, warm and velvety’ in Classica. He here performs these pillars of the oboe repertoire with the support of the renowned Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra in the concerto and in the company of three highly respected young string players in the quartet. To round off the programme Alexei has called in his father, the pianist Leonid Ogrintchouk, and together the two perform a transcription of the Violin Sonata in B flat major, K 378, composed during the same period as the two other works on this disc.

Without doubt, Monteverdi was the greatest of the early baroque European composers. He revolutionised the music of the theatre and the church by his dramatic and imaginative use of voices and instruments and by his daring harmonies and rhythms. Next to his Vespers of 1610, the Selva morale e spirituale of 1641 is his most significant and virtuosic collection of sacred music. Over the next few years we intend to record the complete publication with a variety of forces. His much performed Beatus vir is a mere appetiser for this delightful yet thrilling music.
