On this disc we present a veritable feast of early to mid-twentieth century orchestral music by composers from Argentina, Peru, Brazil, and Columbia. The works are all premier recordings, and brimming with Afro-Cuban and Creole folk-inspired sounds, as well as dance influences from the Argentine tango. Piazzolla’s little-known Milongón Festivo shows an interesting mix of styles, in which the Argentine tango is tempered by the influences of Stravinsky, Bartók, and jazz. Commissioned by Piazzolla’s son, the version on this recording is Castagna’s own arrangement for full symphony orchestra, notably without the use of bandoneón – a musical instrument reminiscent of the accordion, and traditionally an integral part of Argentine tango orchestras. Also on this disc, folk music meets impressionism in two works by the Argentine composer Carrillo, while Congada by Mignone is inspired by Afro-Brazilian dance music, and Valcárcel demonstrates his strong Peruvian style in Concierto Indio, a work for solo violin and orchestra. The Württembergische Philharmonie Reutlingen is one of the most prominent orchestras in Germany, sought after both at home and internationally. It is conducted by Gabriel Castagna, who has worked with numerous orchestras in the US, Europe, and Japan. Latin American music is a speciality of his, and he has received popular and critical acclaim for his many performances and recordings of works by Argentine composers, Piazzolla in particular.

This program is dedicated to the new melodic finesse which appeared in the monophonic repertiore of the so-called Ars Nova. Guillaume de Machaut seems to me to be the ideal central point for such a program. Norbert Rodenkirchen chooses to interpret medieval music in its always strong and undeniable connection to the Gregorian melos.Norbert Rodenkirchen is the flute player of the international acclaimed ensembles Sequentia, Dialogos and Per-sonat. Additionally he works extensively with the modern duo Albrecht Maurer/Norbert Rodenkirchen who specializes on new sounds for archaic instruments.

‘A disc without flaws, a true marvel’ is how Jean-Jacques Kantorow’s previous recording of music by Édouard Lalo was described in the Spanish magazine Scherzo. The disc in question included three works composed for the great violin virtuoso Pablo de Sarasate: the violin concerto, Fantaisie norvégienne and the perennial favourite Symphonie espagnole. In a review in Gramophone, the soloist was compared to his great predecessor: ‘Kantorow, one of today's most individual players, has the measure of Lalo's Sarasate-inspired violin-writing - he's able to toss off the virtuoso passagework in a seemingly effortless manner and his distinctive tone lends a sensuous allure to Lalo's melodies.’ On the present disc, Kantorow plays two other works intended for Sarasate, the brief Fantaisie-ballet on themes from Lalo’s ballet Namouna, and the large-scale Concerto russe. The latter piece, in four movements, borrows themes from two wedding songs included by Rimsky-Korsakov in his collection 100 Russian Folk Songs. A typically expressive and virtuosic composition, it is also one of the first important French works to draw upon Russian music – many others were to follow. Two shorter violin works are included here, but the disc closes with another concerto, the Piano Concerto from 1888. It was the composer’s final major work, and in it he seems to depart from the pattern of his violin concertos, with their prominent solo parts. Lalo rather chooses to integrate the piano into the orchestral texture, and although the writing is redolent of the great Romantic concertos, it offers few opportunities for the soloist to show off – a possible reason for the work’s absence from modern concert programmes and its rarity on disc. Championing this solo part is Pierre-Alain Volondat, and as in the other works orchestral support is provided by the eminent Tapiola Sinfonietta, conducted by Kees Bakels.

To coincide with the tenth anniversary of the UK Choral Pilgrimage, Harry Christophers and The Sixteen return to the repertoire of Tudor England that made their first tour such a success. Sixteenth-century England was a place of much religious change. It was a dangerous and confusing time as Henry VIII, who had split with Rome, was succeeded by his young son Edward VI, then by the ardent Catholic, Mary, and finally by the Protestant, Elizabeth I. Composers of the day, such as William Byrd, John Sheppard and Thomas Tallis, were required to adapt to rapidly changing musical requirements and it is testament to their incredible skill and musical mastery that they produced such magnificent works in such troubled times. At the heart of this programme are Sheppard’s monumental Media vita in morte sumus and Byrd’s deeply personal setting of Infelix ego. Set amongst these exceptional masterpieces are Byrd’s joyful motets Laudibus in sanctis and Haec dies, and one of the gems of this recording – Tallis’ Miserere nostri.

The young violinist Alina Ibragimova is already established as an admired recording artist, standing alongside great artists of the past and present with her versions of Bach and Beethoven’s violin works. She appears on this latest release with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment and Vladimir Jurowski (in his Hyperion premiere) in a programme which includes a classic of the concerto repertoire: Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto in E minor, Op 64. Ibragimova’s is a glittering, knife-edge performance, her playing a portrayal in itself of the music’s passion held in control through exquisite craft. The Violin Concerto in D minor—an unusual and welcome pairing—is an early work, written when the composer was only thirteen. As with Mendelssohn’s other juvenile works it is extraordinarily accomplished and exceedingly charming.

Nordic Voices is a six-voice a cappella group blending solo and ensemble qualities. They have received glowing praise for their concert performances, and their initial release on Chandos (CHSA 5050) received praise from around the world. Washington Post wrote, ‘Intonations? Impeccable. Ensemble? Unfailing precision in phrasing, dynamics, colour – everything finely tuned. A succession of works ever-changing and expressing in meaning.’ Gramophone noted ‘ringing, clear timbres and an impressive blend.’
