The Way of the Cross (or the Stations of the Cross) does not belong to the liturgy but rather to devotional practice, and has always represented one of the more intense and heartfelt moments of popular worship. The music selected for this recording belongs to the great repertory of the Spanish Renaissance, a period spanning the late fifteenth century up to the time of Victoria. The choice of music is based upon the connection among the various composers as their highly expressive use of musical colour, rendering the music evocative, visual and plastic. The works are of rare beauty and invite us to witness a veritable musical drama. Listening to the sequence of motets from Morales to Anchieta, from Esquivel to Guerrero is like processing along the aisle, viewing the bas-reliefs that represent each of the Stations of the Cross. Within the arc of the 14 stations the two visions of the prophet and the dramatic cry of Christ, have been inserted.

Suzie LeBlanc joins La Nef under the direction of Alexander Weimann  to recreate Renaissance Music as it was heard and presented in Rome at the Barberini’ Palace . The Barberinis surrounded themselves with illustrious thinkers, musicians, artists, and poets, and formed an extended papal family which shared artworks, silver and servants. They mounted lavish theatrical productions, outdoor pageants, presented private music, commissioned art works, and utilized architects. They maintained separate houses but employed many of the same composers, performers, instruments, and performing spaces which linked them all to a common intellectual and artistic program.

Hyperion’s Romantic Violin Concerto series reaches its tenth volume, and turns to two composers based in England, and works by them which have lain hidden for decades. This disc provides a fascinating glimpse of musical history and the shifting fashions of the age which made fame such a fleeting thing for so many composers.Frederic Cliffe had a brief but dazzling career as a composer – his Opus 1 was enthusiastically acclaimed, and he continued to write music for performers including Clara Butt at the peak of her fame. But he disappeared as quickly as he had arrived, and his reputation rests on only six works, including the Violin Concerto in D minor. It was performed by the Budapest-born violinist Tivadar Nachéz, and the finale in particular contains much music in a Hungarian idiom.Baron Frédéric d’Erlanger was a banker, born in Paris but with a German father and American mother, who moved to London in his teens. He was naturalized British and long resident in London, where he was involved in promoting music and was later a trustee of the London Philharmonic Orchestra. He was also a composer, and although his catalogue of works is not huge, throughout his life there was a steady stream of first performances by the most celebrated artists and orchestras of the day. Many record collectors will have come across him as the composer of the ballet music ‘Les cent baisers’, recorded by Dorati and the London Symphony Orchestra after its success when danced at Covent Garden in 1935.Hyperion is delighted to welcome back as soloist the popular virtuoso Philippe Graffin , whose earlier outing in this series met with great critical success.

A word from Angèle Dubeau…I have never placed limits on my choice of repertoire, and for this project, I reached toward a unique world that was creative and vibrant in its originality. In my quest to discover the gems of modern music, I listened to many works written and revisited by composers of great talent. When I began my research, video games quickly emerged as a logical avenue of exploration. I have always strived to interest young people in classical music because I feel it has the power to touch everyone. Seeing the passion of young people for video games, I wanted to understand the secrets of their success and to evaluate their musical value. On my most recent recording, I approached movie music without consideration for the images and scenes that inspired it, and I took the same tack in reviewing the gold mine that is video game music. I have assembled here the works that spoke to me, giving no real thought to the adventures they accompany. I immersed myself in the worlds that created these excerpts, and I conveyed my new conception to the musicians of La Pietà, going into great detail to bring forth all of their beauty and power. Above all, I wanted to avoid distorting them, and my intention has been to preserve the form that initially won over video game aficionados while at the same time breathing new life into them.So it is with great pleasure that I invite you to dive into the fantastical world of video games with me. Antonín Dvořák’s path to his famous cello concerto was long and far from direct. Certainly he had used the instrument to great effect in his orchestral music, but for a long time he doubted its suitability as a solo instrument. To some extent, this disc charts the process of the composer towards the recognition of the full capabilities of the cello, as it includes chamber works that Dvořák composed directly for cello and piano, or arranged for the combination. The earliest of these, although not published until long after the composer’s death, was the Polonaise in A major, a piece lyrical and virtuosic in turns. Some thirteen years later, in 1892, Dvořák composed the Rondo in G minor and arranged Silent Woods, originally a piano duet. Shortly after he also made versions for cello and orchestra of both pieces, almost as if preparing himself for the concerto, which he began writing in 1894. Dvořák’s own practice of arranging existing works has encouraged Christian Poltéra to select a number of the composer’s violin pieces and songs, performing them here in his own transcriptions. These include the Violin Sonatina, from the same time as the Rondo and Silent Woods and originally intended for Dvořák’s own children. Among the songs are Lasst mich allein, which Dvořák quotes it in the slow movement of the cello concerto, and the ever-popular Songs My Mother Taught Me, as well as Rusalka’s Song to the Moon, as eloquent a declaration of love as can be, even when performed without words. Christian Poltéra and Kathryn Stott are regular partners in chamber music, and have previously recorded music by Honegger and Frank Martin together, on discs that have received distinctions such as Diapason.
