This is the third volume in the Chandos series devoted to the music of the Polish composer Witold Lutosławski. It brings together his first surviving orchestral piece (The Symphonic Variations) and his last symphony, as well as two works for piano and orchestra – an early work originally written for two pianos (The ‘Paganini’ Variations), and his very last concerto. The works are performed by the BBC Symphony Orchestra under Edward Gardner, described by Gramophone as a veritable ‘Dream Team’ in Vol. 1. They are joined in this recording by Louis Lortie, the awardwinning pianist and exclusive Chandos artist.  Lutosławski composed his Symphonic Variations while he was studying with Witold Maliszewski at the Warsaw Conservatory. When he showed the work to his teacher, he was told in no uncertain terms: ‘For me your work is ugly.’ A rather disheartening response to be sure, but perhaps also proof that here was a work that was well ahead of its time. Today it fits in easily with the European tradition of variation form, and is considered a prime example of the lush, but edgy harmonies of the composer, and of his vivid ear for instrumental colour and virtuosity.  Less than three years later, Poland was invaded by Germany, and normal music life disappeared. In its place, musical cafés emerged as places where light music as well as mainstream repertoire was performed. Lutosławski made his living in these cafés by playing a repertoire of light music, arranged by himself and his piano-duet partner, Andrzej Panufnik. All but one of these works were destroyed during the Warsaw Uprising in 1944. The sole survivor was the Variations on a Theme of Paganini. The version recorded here is Lutosławski’s orchestration for piano and orchestra, of the original version for two pianos.  Also on this disc is the Piano Concerto, the last of Lutosławski’s concertante works, as well as Symphony No. 4, which Lutosławski composed over four years (1988 – 92), conducting its premiere in Los Angeles, with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, in 1993, just a year before his death.  The Polish series is supported by the Adam Mickiewicz Institute.

To many, the Lahti Symphony Orchestra has become synonymous with excellence in Sibelius repertoire. Its numerous recordings with the previous chief conductor Osmo Vänskä have received countless distinctions and awards, and the orchestra is universally regarded as having a very special affinity for the music of their great compatriot. On the present disc it is Okko Kamu, Vänskä's successor as chief conductor, who wields the baton. Kamu has been a presence on the international scene ever since the early 1970s, when he made a highly-acclaimed set of Sibelius symphonies in partnership with Herbert von Karajan. Here three other works by Sibelius make up the programme, which opens with music for Shakespeare's play The Tempest, for which the composer in 1925 wrote the most ambitious of his several theatre scores. For concert use he later selected the Overture and two Suites recorded here. In 1926, a year after The Tempest, Sibelius again turned to the realm of magic in his masterful evocation of the forest, the symphonic poem Tapiola. The title can be translated as ‘the domain of Tapio’, god of the forest in Finnish mythology, and according to Walter Damrosch, who conducted the first performance, the audience was ‘enthralled by the dark pine forests and the shadowy gods and wood-nymphs who dwell therein’. From the start the work has been regarded as one of the greatest masterpieces from Sibelius’ pen. These two large-scale works are here separated by the seven-minute long symphonic poem The Bard from 1913, a work which in its treatment of the thematic material and the chamber-music-like quality of its scoring invites comparison with the Fourth Symphony of two year’s earlier.

  Polish pianist Ewa Kupiec studied in Warsaw at the Chopin Academy and in London at the Royal Academy of Music. With an extensive and acclaimed discography, she regularly performs at the world’s leading festivals and with major orchestras including the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra and the Warsaw Philharmonic. She feels a close connection with the music of Chopin and is a champion of Polish composers including Władysław Szpilman’s whose music she recorded for Sony’s release of the movie The Pianist. Her prizewinning recordings include works by Lutoslawski, Szymanowsky and Paderewski. She is widely recognised as one of Europe’s most dedicated interpreters of contemporary music.   Chopin’s keyboard works call for the pianist to take the virtuosic demands in their stride whilst at the same time conveying the eloquence in the melodic line. In these Chopin recordings she proves the perfect exponent, her poetic cultivation perfectly suiting this repertoire. Where asked for, Kupiec has the pre-requisite (and considerable) finger power combined with infinitely nuanced phrase endings adjusting her sonority and colour of tone with deft aplomb. Ewa Kupiec’s concert highlights in the summer and fall of 2012 include appearances with the Gewandhausorchester in June, in Ireland the West Cork Chamber Music Festival and the Rheingau Festival in Germany in July, and in October concerts with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic and in Frankfurt an engagement with Brandenburgisches Staatsorchester.

Napisany na fortepian, kwartet smyczkowy i instrumenty elektroniczne album jest rozszerzoną wersją dwudziestopięciominutowego dzieła, które Richter stworzył na potrzeby współpracy z choreografem Waynem McGregorem i artystą wizualnym Julianem Opie. W wyniku tej kolaboracji powstał balet, stworzony w odpowiedzi na zamachy terrorystyczne, które wstrząsnęły Londynem 7 lipca 2005 roku. Jak wyjaśnia Richter,: “utwór ten, w pewnym sensie, opowiada o podróży. Składa się z części, będących medytacją na temat politycznej kondycji ówczesnego Londynu oraz tragedii, która wiązała się z tamtymi wydarzeniami. Każdy z nas znał kogoś, kogo te zamachy dotknęły osobiście lub nawet zabiły. Muzyka ta jest czymś w rodzaju społecznej aktywizacji, aktem protestu”. Wznowienie albumu Infra następuje po premierze krążka Three Worlds: music from Woolf Works, również skomponowanego na potrzeby baletu Wayne’a McGregora (Woolf Works). Muzyka Maxa Richtera zawarta na albumie Infra nawiązuje też do Winterreise Schuberta. Dzieło to jest wspaniałym, pełnym smutku, cyklem gotyckich pieśni, opartych na posępnych poematach Wilhelma Mullera. Osadzone w aurze srogiej zimy, opowiadają o błędnym podróżniku, którego serce oraz pamięć skuwa lód. Richter czerpał inspiracje także z fragmentów The Waste Land T.S. Eliota, zwłaszcza tych, które w oryginalny sposób opisują chaos. Trzeba jednak zaznaczyć, że zarówno Eliot, jak i Schubert czy Muller, ale także Kafka i Kraftwerk – są tu tylko tłem. Richter użył ich wspomnień, historii, sygnałów, wskazówek i impulsów jedynie jako motywacji do pracy i znalezienia swojej własnej drogi. Jak wziąć się za komponowanie utworu i w którym miejscu je zakończyć? Co to znaczy stworzyć coś zupełnie nowego w świecie, którego ramy wyznacza dana nam w spadku tradycja? W świecie, który sam do końca nie wie, co zrobić ze sobą i ze swoimi, wciąż nawarstwiającymi się, wspomnieniami? Wydanie albumu zawiera bonusowy utwór “Sub Piano”

Together with the Dresdner Kammerchor and many renowned soloists these works, true to historical performance practice, will be presented.Already in his Opus primus, the Italian Madrigals, Schütz emerged as an outstanding composer: In their musical quality, the 18 five-part madrigals exceed much that was still composed in the traditional madrigal style at the beginnning of the 17th century.
