Whitesnake zebrali swe najmocniejsze utwory i zamieścili na odpowiednio zatytułowanym wydawnictwie "The Rock Album". W zestawie znalazły się rockowe klasyki kapeli w nowych miksach i zremasterowanych wersjach. To pierwszy krążek zespołu otwierający trylogię "Red, White and Blues Trilogy", na którą złożą się trzy tematycznie wyselekcjonowane wydawnictwa: "Love Songs" (red - czewień), "The Rock Album" (white - biel) i "The Blues Album" (blue - błękit). - Wszystkie piosenki zostały odświeżone, na nowo zmiksowane i zremasterowane - czytamy w komentarzu wokalisty, Davida Coverdale'a. - Niektóre z nich zostały upiększone, gdy ze współproducentem Michaelem McIntyre'em oraz odpowiedzialnym za miksy Christopherem Collierem, uznaliśmy, że trzeba je nieco podrasować, by wydobyć z nich to, co najlepsze. Hailed as ‘the Jascha Heifetz of our day’ (The Globe and Mail, Canada), the violinist James Ehnes is widely considered one of the most dynamic and exciting performers in classical music, appearing regularly with the world’s finest orchestras and conductors. Accompanied here by the BBC Philharmonic under Gianandrea Noseda, Ehnes is the soloist in Bartók’s two violin concertos in which he plays the ‘Marsick’ Stradivarius of 1715, as well as in the viola concerto, performing on the ‘Rolla’ Giuseppe Guadagnini viola of 1793, on loan from the Fulton Collection. James Ehnes said of this disc: ‘These three concertos are among the most striking examples of Bartók’s early, middle, and late periods, each showing a very different side of one of the great musical voices of all time; they are among my very favourite pieces to perform’. Bartók wrote his first concerto for violin in 1908 for the young violinist Stefi Geyer, to whom he was romantically attached at the time, which explains the warm feelings expressed in the first movement; though the relationship ended shortly after the work’s completion, Bartók and Geyer remained on friendly terms. The composer shelved the concerto, which remained in Geyer’s possession, unperformed until two years after her death, nearly fifty years after it was written. Violin Concerto No. 2 was commissioned by the Hungarian violinist Zoltán Székely almost thirty years after the first concerto was completed. Bartók at the time would have preferred to write an extended set of variations, but Székely maintained that, seeing as he was paying for the work, he should get what he asked for. Bartók reluctantly agreed – but later pointed out that he had had his way after all, seeing as the central movement is in variation form, and the finale works with variations of themes from the first movement. The Viola Concerto is among the last pieces on which Bartók worked. Existing only in the form of extended sketches at the time of his death in September 1945, the work was completed by the violist and composer Tibor Serly, a fellow Hungarian and close friend of Bartók’s. Compared to earlier works by Bartók, the concerto is harmonically restrained with a melancholy quality that was always evident in his music, but which intensified in his late years.
This new programme from Private Musicke, with the young Spanish soprano Raquel Andueza, is dedicated to the light Italian delights of the early Baroque period. Everything centres on love in the labyrinth of hope, sorrow, optimism, disappointment and joy. This music is a small selection of the utterly incalculable amount of printed music that appeared between 1610 and 1640. At the sonic centre is the "chitarra espanola" which was explicitly conceived as the accompanying instrument for all the pieces; during these years, it began its soaring flight which has continued up to the present day. One can hear arias, villanelles and canzonas by betterknown composers such as Giovanni Girolamo Kapsberger and Tarquinio Merula. Girolamo Montesardo, Giovanni Stefani, Flaminio Corradi and certain other forgotten authors, however, are now rubbing their eyes after several hundred years of sleep, glancing around themselves in bewilderment: not much has changed. A song is still a song and nothing seems more suitable for giving expression to the overflowing heart. If there were a hit parade from this period, several of the songs on this programme would surely be amongst the top ten.

The piano remained the main instrument of Beethoven throughout his life, and this specially priced 4-CD box set represents his entire and sizeable output for piano and orchestra, starting with the early Piano Concerto in E flat, WoO 4 – a work of tremendous energy and great technical demands, which Beethoven wrote when he was just twelve years old – and ending with Piano Concerto No. 5, the only one that Beethoven never performed himself in concert, due to his developing deafness. Howard Shelley was awarded an OBE for services to classical music at the 2009 New Year Honours. He here conducts the Orchestra and Chorus of Opera North from the piano. Shelley has recorded extensively for Chandos over the years, and he has combined the role of solo pianist and conductor on numerous occasions, most recently with the Orchestra of Opera North in Piano Concertos by Schumann, Saint-Saëns, and Grieg (CHAN 10509), but also with the London Mozart Players, recording works by Cramer, Hummel, Mendelssohn, and Mozart. All his recordings have received superb reviews. Beethoven wrote the Triple Concerto on this disc in 1803 during a lull in the composition of his opera Fidelio. Works for violin, cello and piano were fairly common at the time – but combining them with orchestra was, as Beethoven himself observed, something entirely new, and no other concerto of this kind from this period is known today. In this work, Howard Shelley is joined by the violinist and exclusive Chandos artist Tasmin Little, who won the Critics’ Choice Award at this year’s Classic BRITS, and by the cellist Tim Hugh, of whom The Times said: ‘Mr Hugh is much more than just a Cellist, he is a musician with a compelling insight into the creative urge behind the notes.’
