This pair of exciting discs from the Dallas Symphony Orchestra and Andrew Litton offers thrilling new recordings of all four of Charles Ives’s extraordinary symphonies. The idiosyncratic nature of Ives’s early musical training (simultaneous but competing marching bands, etc) is well known, but before we can delight in its fruits, we find Ives-the-student writing a (relatively) conventional Symphony No 1 under the watchful, if not always approving, stare of his tutor. The result is almost a pastiche of all that we know and love from the late-nineteenth century symphonic tradition: Brahms, Dvorvák, Tchaikovsky. Released from college in 1898, Ives rapidly shook off such influences, entered a new century and set about expanding his extraordinary vision through three further symphonies, culminating in the spiritual marathon of the fourth, which—Ives tells us—poses (and answers, threefold) the cosmic questions ‘what?’ and ‘why?’. Alongside the four symphonies we have Central Park in the Dark, and an Ives-sanctioned orchestral arrangement of his most popular (and outrageous) solo song, General William Booth Enters into Heaven. The commanding baritone of Donnie Ray Albert tells the story of General Booth—founder of the Salvation Army—approaching the pearly gates, the great unwashed in his following (Dallas Symphony Chorus) assured of being ‘washed in the blood of the Lamb’: Hallelujah! Captured live during concerts in Dallas, the recorded sound is every bit worthy of these epic works. Both discs are available in conventional CD format as well as DSD multichannel hybrid SACD.
Inger Marie Gundersen pochodzi z miasta Arendal w Norwegii. Świat zachwycił się nią w 2004 r., kiedy wydała swój debiutancki album -Make This Moment". I nie można się temu dziwić, gdyż jej interpretacje standardów i hipnotyzujący głos zachwycają słuchaczy wrażliwych, szukających w muzyce czegoś więcej, niż wygładzonych fraz, czy mdłych aranżacji. A niestety takie coraz częściej serwują nam wokalistki, które z biegiem lat po prostu nie mają pomysłu na siebie. Najlepszym przykładem mogą być choćby ostatnie dokonania Norah Jones.Tymczasem głos Inger przyciąga i hipnotyzuje, nie brak mu pewnej szorstkości, którą otacza jednak fala ciepłej, niezobowiązującej nutki melancholii. Słychać w nim bagaż życiowych doświadczeń i może dlatego chcemy zatrzymać go w sobie? Momentami przypomina Dianę Krall, innym razem K.d. Lang. A wokół harmonia i wyczucie, oszczędne brzmienie instrumentów: fortepian, bas, saksofon, gitara, delikatna perkusja... Czy trzeba więcej?Zanim jednak ta sympatyczna blondynka zdobyła popularność, poświęciła muzyce 25 lat życia, aktywnie udzielając się w różnych zespołach lokalnych scen - od rocka począwszy, na jazzie skończywszy. Założyła własny kwintet My Favourite Strings, w którym na gitarze grał Tom Lund - jeden z najlepszych norweskich instrumentalistów, założyciel słynnego w tym kraju Trio de Janeiro.Gdy nastał rok 2004, artystka podjęła decyzję o nagraniu własnej płyty. I był to odpowiedni czas. Jej możliwości wokalne okazały się zdumiewające. Umiejętność stopniowania napięcia to dziś w muzyce jazzowej rzadkość, a Inger Marie Gundersen nauczyła się operować głosem i panować nad nim w taki sposób, że jej pierwszy producent, znany w środowisku muzyk i artysta Lars Martin Myhre, gdy usłyszał ją w studiu, nie mógł się nadziwić i stał długo z otwartymi ustami, słuchając kogoś, kto nie potrzebował już specjalnych wskazówek, jak należy wydobywać dźwięk, by osiągnąć zamierzony efekt.Debiutancki album -Make This Moment" okazał się strzałem w dziesiątkę. Nagrania podobały się w Norwegii. Z czasem do interpretacji znanych miłosnych tematów -Always On My Mind" (Elvis Presley), czy -Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow" (Carole King) zaczęli chętnie sięgać słuchacze z innych krajów. Jej muzyka i głos spodobały się przede wszystkim odbiorcom azjatyckim. O ile na początku sprzedaż krążka liczona była w setkach egzemplarzy, to potem produkcja wzrosła do tysięcy. W najbliższym czasie ta ilość płyt na pewno się nie zmniejszy. Małcużyński pozostając w zgodzie z tradycją wielkich poprzedników wprowadził do znanego repertuaru także wiele świeżości i oryginalnego podejścia, jego szczególne rubato oraz precyzyjne frazowanie znalazło kontynuację we współczesnej pianistyce, chociażby w nagraniach Krystiana Zimermana. Niniejsze nagrania prezentujące romantyczne oblicze Małcuzyńskiego były niedostępne przez dekady i stanowią absolutne odkrycie dla wszystkich miłośników muzyki fortepianowej!
