Think you know Italian baroque chamber music? Think again. The range, diversity – and even wackiness – is remarkable, as illustrated by Flights of Fantasy, an album of acute inventiveness by Avie stalwart Monica Huggett and the chamber soloists of her Irish Baroque Orchestra. Take Carlo Farina’s Capriccio Stravagante, which translates as “outlandish whim”, and imitates barking dogs, meowing cats and gunfire. More serious, but no less virtuosic, experimental forms occur in works by Marini, Castello, Legrenzi, and Cavalli – the Venetian best known for his operas – all heard on this album. Created in 1996, the period-instrument Irish Baroque Orchestra occupies a fundamental place in Ireland’s musical landscape. Ten years in, the mantle of artistic director was assumed by Monica Huggett, who has created a decades-long career of critically acclaimed and award-winning recordings, including the Billboard chart-topping, Grammy-nominated Bach Orchestral Suites on Avie (AV 2171).

Oficjalnego nagrania zaślubin, które odbyły się w Kaplicy Świętego Jerzego na Zamku Windsor, dokonała prestiżowa angielska firma Decca Records. Podczas ceremonii wystąpili znakomici artyści. Wśród nich - wiolonczelista Sheku Kanneh Mason, walijska sopranistka Elin Manahan Thomas, Chór Kapeli Świętego Jerzego oraz The Kingdom Choir. Orkiestra, dyrygowana przez Christophera Warrena-Greena, została utworzona z muzyków Narodowej Orkiestry Walii BBC, Filharmonii oraz English Chamber Orchestra. W uroczystości wzięli też udział Królewscy Heraldzi. Nad oprawą muzyczną czuwał James Vivian, Dyrektor Muzyczny Kapeli Św. Jerzego. Decca podzieli się zyskiem ze sprzedaży albumu. Część pieniędzy zasili konto Królewskiej Fundacji Księcia i Księżnej Cambridge i Księcia Harry’ego.
This collection of the complete chamber music of Poulenc shows the varying styles that he employed. From the jazzy, bitonal passages of the Sonata for Clarinet and Bassoon and the Sonata for Horn, Trumpet and Trombone which has been described as 'Pergolesi with his wig awry' (Roger Nichols, Grove) to the profound beauty of his last three sonatas for wind. All are extremely accessible.
