Michael Praetorius was a hugely versatile German composer. His 1603 post as Kapellmeister in Wolfenbüttel necessitated extensive travel throughout Germany, enabling him to establish widespread acclaim as a conductor and musical advisor. Praetorius’s church music is much less known today than it should be, partly because of the sheer volume that he composed. This beautiful selection of hymns, chorales and carols attempts to reproduce the effect of a performance under Praetorius’s direction; soloists are drawn from the choir and instruments of late sixteenth- or early seventeenth-century design are used.

Among the many child prodigies that have made their mark in the history of music, Felix Mendelssohn is, along with Mozart, possibly the most impressive. By the age of fifteen he had already composed 13 string symphonies and a number of concertos, and his first ‘proper’ symphony was not far away. He wasn’t just highly productive, however – his contemporaries already recognized the high quality of the works he produced: ‘Felix Mendelssohn composes with the greatest conceivable ease and with inextinguishable abundance of spirit, the most difficult pieces…’ wrote a German reviewer in 1822. Both pieces recorded here were composed with Mendelssohn’s friend and violin teacher, Eduard Ritz, in mind. Felix himself premièred the Double Concerto in D minor with Ritz in May 1823 at one of the famous Sunday concerts at the Mendelssohn residence in Berlin, but except for a second outing later the same year, the work remained unperformed until 1957. Here the piano part – in turn quick-silvery and lyrical – is defended by the Russian-born pianist Polina Leschenko, making her first appearance on BIS. She is partnered by Richard Tognetti, artistic director and leader of the Australian Chamber Orchestra.  Tognetti also leads seven of his colleagues from the ACO in the String Octet in E flat major, which Mendelssohn composed as a birthday present for Eduard Ritz. Written two years after the concerto, the octet only received its first public performance in 1836 but quickly became immensely popular. Although it belongs to the genre of chamber music, Mendelssohn himself underlined that it was to be played ‘in symphonic orchestral style by all the instruments’. He also explored the orchestral potential of the work at a performance of his Symphony No.1 in 1829, replacing the symphony’s minuet with an expanded arrangement of the Octet’s scherzo.

Described as 'a prince among violists', Maxim Rysanov was in 2010 chosen to perform at the Last Night of the Proms. On that illustrious occasion he played his own adaptation of Tchaikovsky's Rococo Variations, in a performance described by one reviewer as so seductive that it 'almost made one forget that it had been composed for the cello.' For the present disc, Rysanov has chosen to record the work with the expert support of the Swedish Chamber Orchestra under the conductor Muhai Tang. The strings of that orchestra also join him in another work usually performed on the cello – and usually with the original piano accompaniment. Schubert's Sonata in A minor was composed for the arpeggione, a synthesis of cello and guitar invented in Vienna in 1823, and soon all but forgotten. It is in fact only Schubert's glorious sonata that has ensured that the name – if not the instrument itself – has survived. Commissioned by the soloist, the Bulgarian-born composer Dobrinka Tabakova has orchestrated it with the aim to 'retain the lightness and delicacy of the accompaniment, and remain as true to the original score as possible.’ The programme is rounded off with the one completely original composition on this disc, namely the  autumnal Romance in F major by Max Bruch, who in his 73rd year used all the skill acquired during a long life to express his nostalgia for a musical language irrevocably lost. On his previous disc for BIS, Rysanov also turned to the cello repertoire, performing three of Bach's suites for solo cello. That recording was selected for a special recommendation in The Strad and chosen as Classical CD of the Week in the Daily Telegraph. On the German website klassik.com, one reviewer proved particularly prophetic as he wrote that 'Rysanov, if he continues to record such successful transcriptions for the viola, will be giving cellists a hard match in their traditional repertoire.'

Stéphane Dénève, the new principal conductor of the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra of SWR, makes his debut recording with a thoughtful and exceptionally well-balanced program of music by the French composer Francis Poulenc. As has been said many times before, Poulenc was both a monk and a rascal; deeply religious one hand, while enjoying celebrity and flamboyant lifestyle on the other. These two sides of his personality are beautifully represented in the program of this CD. First off, there is the enchantingly frivolous ballet "Les Biches," written in 1924 for Serge Diaghilev and the Ballets Russes. For this recording, Denève performs the full version, including the three tableaux with chorus.Poulenc's spiritual side is represented by the "requiem" he composed for the painter Christian Bérard - on the text of the Stabat Mater, a medieval hymn meditating on the suffering of Mary during Christ's crucifixion. Scored for soprano, chorus and orchestra Poulenc's hauntingly passionate Stabat Mater is widely considered one of the greatest sacred choral works of the 20th century.
